Nautical Horror

Post by Fuzzy Necromancer »

Something about the isolation, the unique flavor of the setting...I am just a sucker for horror fiction, TV, or film set on the high seas.

F. Marion Crawford's "The Upper Berth" is one of the best ghost stories I've ever read. Leviathan, Below, Virus, and The Fog occupy a place of pride on my DVD shelf, and I'm willing to at least tolerate Ghost Ship's problems, Lost Voyage's foibles, and Kraken's...well, badness, because of the seaborn terror they offer me.

I'm always looking for more horror movies set at sea, but I'd really like to get into some nautical horror novels. For some reason I find them really difficult to find though. A largely realism-based work about homocidal humbolt squids (Below by Ryan Lockwood) managed to keep my attention, and I found some conspiracy-based scifi horror work about the Titanic to be beyond my tolerance in terms of writing, but I've rarely had a chance to explore the setting in a horror context properly.

Is anyone else a fan of the sub-genre? Does anyone have some works to recommend?

SOMA and Bioshock are pretty creepy games, neither of them are outright horror titles but they're both very atmospheric and they feature disturbing and scary elements in their stories.

I'm not familiar with SOMA. What is it?

A survival horror game from the same people who made Amnesia.
