I read a sci fi duology called the Saga of Cuckoo years ago. The setting had no FTL travel for sapients, but it did have FTL transmission and matter duplicators. So you stayed at home and sent a copy of yourself somewhere. The people were trained to believe that as long as one copy survived, the person was alive.
The first book involved a crew "sent" to launch a probe to investigate a Dyson sphere, knowing that it would kill those copies. The training didn't take for all of them, and a violent disagreement about launching the probe ensued.
