One bit from his micro review of "Affliction" that I wish made it to the video review.MixedDrops wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2019 7:25 am https://web.archive.org/web/20080116190 ... r/e832.asp
Thanks Wayback Machine, now I can embarrass Chuck with his older opinions whenever I want.

Same - I'm actually digging how having a different captain each season with different command styles shakes up the dynamic of the show without having to redo everything.Makeshift Python wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2019 5:56 pm Which is not surprising to me. I've greatly enjoyed Mount's Pike, but knew that he was always just going to be the guest captain of the season. Romijn was introduced in only one episode so far, but I understanding is she doesn't really play into things until towards the end of the season.
I look forward to who will take over the chair for the third season. I have a strong feeling Saru, now with his newly found confidence and assertiveness, will be sitting in the captain's chair with Michael as his first officer.

A review I watched helped clarify how I feel about Discovery:
The directing is great
The acting is great
The characters are great
The writing is god awful

Re: Sta Trek Discovery season 2 megathread
So the most recent episode was hot garbage all the way through. That death cocktease scene for Burnham (which, don't cocktease me, if you set up that she's about to die have the balls to actually kill the boring jerk) was worse than Tom Paris's death in Threshold. Loud, over-the-top, busy, no dignity.
This whole fucking show is such a fucking mess it's not even funny. The directing varies, but usually comes out on the good side of passable, the acting varies but most of the cast other than Sarek, Ashvoq, and Burnham are at least clearly trying (Sarek is hot garbage, Burnham is bush league, and Ashvoq just has so little to work with STILL that I can't tell if he's a good actor or not), problem is this is trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
The core problem is that the writing is hot garbage and the characters are mediocre. I could do nothing but laugh during cyborg lady's lavish funeral. This show is trying so fucking hard it's blowing out its own goddamn ACL. What the fuck even is this? How could one show be so fucked up?

That it? For the chronic lingering indifference that DYS circulates on forums, bad writing is like the first thing that comes to mind for a long time. Not because bad writing is some single contingency beside the broad notion that expectations are not being met with the viewer.TheNewTeddy wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 12:56 am A review I watched helped clarify how I feel about Discovery:

I don't watch this dying show any more so I got to ask: that cyborg on the bridge who had no character in season 1 got a massive funeral scene? Where did it come on the Trek funeral scale? Tasha Yar's soppy funeral with the full orchestra, Janeway's fantasy funeral in ''Coda'' where everyone was so cut up they were one step away from committing suicide to go off and join her, or Spock's dignified and iconic torpedo scene with the bagpipes? None of these seem like they should be applied to her.Worffan101 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 2:05 am So the most recent episode was hot garbage all the way through. Y'know what that cyborg in season 1 reminded me of? Sigourney Weaver's character in Galaxy Quest, whose only job was to basically tell everyone what the computer was telling her.

Janeway's fantasy funeral but it wanted to be Tasha's.clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 11:40 amI don't watch this dying show any more so I got to ask: that cyborg on the bridge who had no character in season 1 got a massive funeral scene?
