Looks... lame. Honestly, I don't think they can do much to salvage the franchise at this point. Unless the film uses the time travel elements from Rebels and wipe the ST away Days of Future Past style, I don't really know how they can save it.

I mean, Rey is bland and terrible, Finn is wasted potential, Kylo is ho hum, Poe is... fine, Hux is a loser, Rose is...bleh! BB8 is really the only character from the ST I like and he's basically just R2 2.0.

Also, wonder why we didn't see R2 in the trailer? That's another issue I take with the ST: R2 has always been my favorite character, yet in these films he feels like a prop, a problem they never had before. It was either a dwarf in a prop or a CGI effect or a cartoon yet he always felt alive. In the ST he's essentially either a one scene wonder prop to move the plot forward or a background prop.

I predict, that much like "Return of the Jedi" was well received by general audiences upon its release, because the catharsis of finishing a story with plenty of fun and excite is good... that there will ultimately be flaws which nerds will fixate upon to ruin the movie for themselves and ultimately annoy other people with.

I also suspect that no matter what happens certain segments of self professed fans will complain about it forever. Because everyone takes this goofy space adventure series far too seriously.

Trailer looks fine.

I already work at a theater, so I won't need to worry about the question of whether or not to spend money on it. The first 107 seconds did pretty much nothing for me, then the Sheev chuckle raised my interest. So it's like, maybe I'll see where they go with this. They could easily disappoint and have him in it for only ten minutes of a three-hour film, and I'm fully prepared to be uninterested in everything else in it, but if it costs me nothing either way, perhaps.

I'm with Rocketboy here. It will be a good but slightly flawed movie. Maybe more ""safe"" than TLJ but probably less ""safe"" than people expect.

The fandom discourse about this movie will be far be obnoxious than whatever will be in the movie. While there are valid criticisms about the ST, there's a lot which is just not criticism in any form.

In terms of the title. The skywalker the title is referring is possibly Kylo Ren. He is half Skywalker(and currently the second to last one since Leia will be in a few scenes before drying.) So him redeeming himself and sacrificing himself to finally end Palpatine would be a way to finally close the Skywalker saga and let Rey start a new Jedi order.

I want to note something else.

Years ago I told some friends what my joke reboot for the series would be.

It involved a text crawl,
"Peace, blah, blah, blah...
"An Aging Luke and his students sense evil blah, blah, blah...
"Investigating a mysterious world blah, blah, blah..."

And it would cut to them arriving on some ancient planet and finding only a single structure which is some ancient darkside temple, they go in fight a bunch of cultists... blah, blah, blah...

Anyway the ultimate revelation of the movie was going to be Red force ghosts with Palpatine saying "Rise..." and a counsel of evil force ghosts manifest to undermine and destroy the new Republic.

I said all this... because I thought the idea of rehashing the Emperor was so bad it had to make one laugh.

I'll be disappointed if they don't say the name "Sheev" out loud multiple times during the movie.

Isn't Palpatine technically also a Skywalker given that he is Anakin's dad? Surely he has just as much claim to it as Leia has given how she has never gone by the surname.
We used to argue whether Star Trek or Star Wars was better. Now we argue which one is worse.

Being a fan and complaining is as old as civilization. Seriously, we have documented evidence of that sort of thing happening in the audiences of Greek plays 3000 years ago.

No, because Skywalker comes from Anakins' mother Shmi Skywalker. Like almost every other kid who is raised by a single mother and an unknown father.

More accurate to say that Anakin is entitled to call himself Anakin Palpatine.

Anyway, I predict that Palpatine will be some sort of evil Force ghost (even though Lucas says that Darksiders don't have them, but when has that stopped anyone?), haunting Endor like he sort-of did in the Thrawn trilogy.
