When putting that Roddenberry's military background into consideration it really seems strange how much he went his way to make Starfleet not seem like military fleet when it's that for all intents and purposes. It's almost like he wanted to distance himself from time he spend in USAAC.

tng on the other hand was made over a decade after the end of the vietnam war, when the american people's attitude toward the military & toward militarism in general was much more negative. that's when roddenbery decided to claim that star fleet we not, nor had ever been a military organization, despite that seeming to directly conflict with the original show.

I could be mistaken but I had this impression that Reagan era had big return of pro-military attitude in USA. After all 80's was when G.I. Joe returned as A Real American Hero after original 60's toy line had been discontinued after Vietnam War.

When I first saw this, I was pleasantly surprised that the ID4 mothership was the biggest ship (by particular dimensions). Kinda makes sense as I would imagine Emerich writing more a pop blockbuster movie, saying, "let's just make it really f'in big" and they actually had a real easy spec to convey to the audience with relation to the moon.

The thing is big for things meant to destroy planets or carry entire civilizations makes sense to me. If you said the Millenium Falcon was a world killer you would have people screaming that it was 'unrealistic'. But make it built around a central cannon and all that, it feels plausible to suspension of disbelief. Lexx is a world killer and so forth. Specialty vessel. The super star destroyer on the other hand feels like an attempt to recapture the awe of the arrival of the first star destroyer in A New Hope. You know how big this is. Now look how awesome this other ship is!
And I felt it was meh. It wasn't as menacing and it made the regular star destroyers seem less impressive at the same time.

Funny that you would mention that because in SW Legends there is Sun Crusher that isn't that large but is able to like it name says destroy stars and with it star systems. Also SW legends has Eclipse class Super Star Destroyer that's even larger than Super Star Destroyer (both are by the way classified as Dreadnought class capital ships) that has Death Star's laser as it's main weapon making it able to destroy planets just like Death Star. Yeah SW Legends tend to go over the top time to time and be absolutely ridiculous.

Well what you describe as far as what they were going for was my experience watching Empire Strikes Back time and again. Death Star's great, but I never really gave as much thought to its size compared to Vader's ship. Even when it runs into the death star, I'm just thinking more about the size of the death star in terms of the ship mostly (same difference I know). So I think the novelty of it worked despite us never really given a reason for why Vader needs it, which is what I grew to wonder about the damn thing.
