That's not actually accurate because it that Were the case then Korra and Asami would have NO screen time together. But they do, not a whole lot but just about every major moment that advances their relationship is Shown to use instead of being told. I'm not going to pretend that The Legend of Korra isn't flawed cause it is but it Does have its' strengths and it goes without saying that Korra and Asami's relationship Is a major game changer in western animation.
Soon after the two became a couple shows like Steven Universe, Gravity Falls and Adventure Time went from implying that characters Might be gay to out right stating that they were gay and in healthy relationships with other queer characters. Korra and Asami were already a popular ship before the two had gotten together in no small part due to how well their relationship was handled in Change and Balance. Back when it was on the Ho Yay Page Korra and Asami's relationship took up about 90% of said page so it was NOT a case of it came out of nowhere. It WAS there and just about everyone saw it, its just no one expected it to actually happen because at the time same sex relationships in "Kids Shows" in the USA were considered taboo.
Again I'll grant you that the show is flawed and Korra and Mako are certainly a couple that most people would consider poorly-written and inconsistent. But Korrasami? No. Everything that is seen in the show itself shows a progression from romantic rivals to friends to best friends and finally to lovers. Korra falls in love with Asami because she was there for her in a way no one else has ever been and Asami fell in love with Korra for the same reason.
Mako fell for Korra because that's what the script said he would do. He had no reason to fall for her and was rude to her for most of first two seasons and the same goes for his relationship with Asami. And the reason both fell for him was because he was the main male lead character.
THAT'S poor writing, characters falling for one another simple because of their respective roles in the story which is one of the reasons why I so strongly dislike Kylo and Rey in the Disney Sequel Trilogy. Rey has even LESS reason for fall for Kylo then Korra and Asami have to fall for Mako and yet she is willing to give him a chance to redeem himself because he was nice to her.
Korra and Asami started falling in love for one another because they had been there for each other and you don't need the comics to tell you that, it's in the show for everyone to see. Korra and Asami falling for Mako was because the plot said so and the same thing goes for Kylo and Rey.
Korrasami, a Well-Written Relationship.
