But even in expensive big budgeted movies/ shows sometimes the interactions with cg characters can be a little off even if the rendering of the character is good because they are not really there interacting. It is a problem that is getting better and better the more CG is used. but sometimes the actors aren't quite looking at the cg characters like they are actually there with them. In a smaller tv show with a more rushed schedule it may not be as great.

But the Star Trek universe is a microcosm of earth and history just in space. For most of humanities history we have had trouble getting along with each other over stupid things like looking slightly different from each other. Even though really it was a budget issue that we didn't see so many crazy looking aliens I think for the stories that were being told it fit better. Its part of the visual style at this point to have lots of the rubber foreheads. Still the newer show could add some variety but I honestly am a bit worried about having a main character that is totally cgi or and such.

And, as has been noted, there is such a thing as sex appeal, and you'll notice that Aeryn Sun was played by a non-prothestic wearing Claudia Black, and we didn't have John Crichton fall in love with a Rygel-like puppet. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but there was a story that the aliens in Avatar were remodeled over and over again until someone said, "Yeah, I'd do it."

To counter the sex appeal statement, human sexuality is much more ominovorous than you give it credit for. Given a charismatic voice actor, a lot of us will be ready, even eager, to fuck whatever monstrousity you throw on the screen. I don't know what corners of the internet you come from, but out at my end, it's not uncommon for people to drool over haunted animatronics and dragons.
