Harry Potter Book 1: Learning, doing reports, etc to win points to get the House Cup is useless because the headmaster will award enough points to his favorite at the last second so that his house wins.
And what gets me it's not exactly that he gave the cup away, it would have been something if he just said "Harry, Hermione and Ron did something incredible here's the house cup" Dumbledore did it in the most slow and torturous fashion to the Slytherin:
