I fully concur with this... And the video maker is a touch divisive with some folks, so I want to see reactions...

Re: Glass of Water - Top 5 Best, Worst and Blandest Star Wars Characters - [Lily Orchard]
I don't much care for LO mainly because it almost feels like she does all this just to get attention. I mean, she goes on about how she doesn't care what others think and yet also goes on about what everyone says and how wrong they are for holding a different opinion then her and bases just about every review on why everyone needs to be shown why they're wrong.
While I don't always agree with him Linkara does take other opinions into account but mostly sticks to his own opinion. Take how he talks about Batman and Robin or Batman: Odyssey, he doesn't really talk about what everyone else thinks about those works but rather the story of said works. Lily seems to only talk about other people say and what they think and how wrong they are.
I honestly can't recall a single video where she only focused on the work and not what someone else said about it. Even this review takes more time talking about the creators and the fans but not really the characters. And other series she's talked about, Korra, Steven Universe, MLP and Star Wars are all things that are hugely popular so she goes on about how bad they are but never really talks about the work only what others say about it and why they're "Wrong".
So, every time I see something from her I don't really get anything other then someone demanding that you pay attention and only talks about things that are big so they have a chance of someone noticing them. I could be wrong, but it honestly does seem just like someone who isn't interested in the work and is only interested in if anyone is listening to them.
But for me, I have no opinion on someone who doesn't really seem to have any real interest in talking about anything. Mecha82 is someone I'm interested in talking with because, even if I don't agree with them I still get an insight into what they think about the work itself. They give me a good idea of what they like about a story and that's always fun. I'm not always polite in my response but I still value their opinion.
LO, only seems to care if someone paying attention and therefore never really has anything interesting to say, at least that's how I see it.

As I've always taken it, she talks about the people behind bad works because where else would the problems lie then with the creators, especially if they have a habit of pandering to that vocal minority of fandom who want every work to be a glorified RPG sourcebook with the tone of Warhammer 40k on steroids?Winter wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 2:40 am I don't much care for LO mainly because it almost feels like she does all this just to get attention. And she's always been articulate about why she finds a work inferior, often a touch TOO articulate. Nor have I ever seen her as a disinterested attention-seeker. Of course, any interest in a subject she shows is never necessarily POSITIVE, as the 'Garbage' videos will tell you.
Or I simply like her voice/personality and agree with her opinions, so I'm more forgiving of her flaws than most. My reasons for liking things have a habit of boiling down to that primal 'make feel good' sensation. Frick, I'm rambling...

Well this is the right sight for rambling,ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 5:50 am As I've always taken it, she talks about the people behind bad works because where else would the problems lie then with the creators, especially if they have a habit of pandering to that vocal minority of fandom who want every work to be a glorified RPG sourcebook with the tone of Warhammer 40k on steroids?

But over to LO, I honestly just don't find her to be very interesting. Nothing she says was said be someone else and be it criticisms or praise they always seem more interesting to me. Going over to her list here, she doesn't, IMO, really add anything of interest. She calls both Kyle and Revan overrated but I've heard this before and done in either more depth or done in such a way as to be funny.
Going over to SuperButerBuns when she mentioned Final Fantasy 7 being overrated she didn't elaborate but the way she said it was funny as she just just sort of goes from avoiding the topic of it being overrated and then, without any real pause, just says it's overrated. Later videos she elaborates more on the subject and shows that why she still enjoys it she explains her point in more detail while still being funny.
Lily, when she talks about these characters, I get the impression that she's not really trying to explain herself but just trying to say whatever has been said and then just saying a bunch of buzz words that will get her more attention.
To better show what I mean, in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables Russell Crowe was critized for his poor singing but the as others have pointed out it's not that Crowe is a bad singer as he is in tune and knows how to frame his melodies. The issue is he's clearly not giving the role his all and is using a style that is so different from the rest of the cast that it feels jarring and out of place. There's also the fact that Crowe really isn't giving the film his all especially when compared to Jackman and Hathaway who both give their songs as much power as they can and thus feel a lot more real.
LO feels like that to me, it feels like she's not really putting any effort into her opinions and most of what she says, whether you agree with it or not, was already said and said with a lot more compassion why Lily just seems to say it. But that's just me and I don't review people for a reason.

That my friend is called confirmation bias. You basically want to hear other people agree with you and seems like LO is among those leading you to be more forgiving of her flaws because of it.ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 5:50 am agree with her opinions, so I'm more forgiving of her flaws than most.

1) Yeah, Buns is fun, too. Just saw the 'Bloodborne for Experts' videos, great work there. Can't wait for the next 'For Beginners'.Winter wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 6:10 amWell this is the right sight for rambling,ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 5:50 am As I've always taken it, she talks about the people behind bad works because where else would the problems lie then with the creators, especially if they have a habit of pandering to that vocal minority of fandom who want every work to be a glorified RPG sourcebook with the tone of Warhammer 40k on steroids?

2) Her hatred of Ren has mostly been a case of him being a pouty, genocidal, angst machine that the creators seem to be bending over backward to get the viewer to root for and to get him with Rey, a pairing with SO MANY dark, abusive, implications... But, apparently, that turns some folks on, so... Her ranking folks like Rose and Holdo and even Finn low was due to them getting shunted aside after each's inaugural films for the 'Greasy Boy Creeps on Cute Mechanic' trilogy. And, yeah, Rey and Lana being so high is a simple case of 'butch girl pretty'.
3) Hell, if you want to see her 'butch girl pretty' bias on full display while she and her fiance try to fix the Sequels, you should read 'The Sith Resurgence'. It's a long string of meet cites, cuddling, and punching Ren in the face. https://archiveofourown.org/works/22215277/
4) And, yeah, like Mecha said, confirmation bias. Take me with a grain of salt.
