I'm Done

Post by Link8909 »

I’ve been a longtime viewer of Chucks while opinionated, still well thought out, well-researched, and thoroughly entertaining reviews, and I came to his forums to talk about (among other things) Star Trek, a franchise that I have been a fan of for 24 years, and to try and show a positive side and differing view to the recent Star Trek series that I’ve personally been enjoying in a constructive and respectable manner, as well as have a chance to talk to others about this in this same manner.

However, while there are people here that regardless of their opinions, I had a pleasure to talk to and learn new aspects that I never thought about, much like on YouTube, I was met with the same cynical, disrespectful, and hate-filled attitude that put me off ever looking up Star Trek on YouTube and looking for good content, and while I’ve tried to still show a positive and understanding view, after recently seeing someone that I still have the upmost respect for give into the same toxic nostalgia that they had cautioned other about, and with Chucks reviews on Star Trek Discovery that not only gives into this attitude, I have been put off of watching any future reviews of Star Trek Discovery, as well as the non-scripted content of the other.

This also nearly affected my enjoyment of not just the new series, but of the entire franchise as a whole, as all this made me start to question why I loved this franchise to begin with, as well as affecting my own mental health, as I was starting to be consumed by these negative thoughts, but after I watched Star Trek Lower Decks and recently re-watched Star Trek Picard, I was reminded why I love Star Trek, a wonderful and imaginative world, with great and interesting characters, that uses it’s platform to talk about real world issues, and showing that while flawed, we can always strive to be empathetic, optimistic, and above all, to be better.

And yet when I come here and what I see from other places that talk about Star Trek, while I do see people being understanding, respectful, or trying to be better, I more often see people loudly and un-ironically demanding that Star Trek lives up to its ideal in the most hate-filled and disrespectful way possible, because quite frankly they don’t like to be told that they’re imperfect, and rather than trying to be better in the here and now, demand that they’re told they’re perfect now and don’t need to put any work into being kind, because it will all work out later.

And so I must make a choice, do I live in isolation, but still enjoy the franchise I’ve loved since I was 5, and keep enjoying the newer series despite their flaws, but unable to share my own views and thoughts on them, or do I remain in the company of misery, and continue to be told that the newer series that I love are bad and I should feel bad and stupid for liking them, and either be browbeaten into the same negative mindset because people were not given the Star Trek series that they demanded, that because the newer series isn’t filling them with that same childhood nostalgia that will never come no matter what because they have grown up with such a negative and demanding view on life, or I end up hating both the fandom and the franchise together, and much like with many other franchises including Star Trek, in peoples attempt to “protect” the franchises integrity, do more harm to the franchises image of the fans by putting off other people that do want to get into them.

So reluctantly, I’m not going to post or even look here anymore, and even be more selective on what I do watch online, and there is no malice in my words either, like I said, there are people here that are good and understanding, and I still have much respect for them, as well as Chuck himself, and for those that had put me off returning here, I honestly hope one day that you recognize this self destructive path of hatred you’re on, and try to strive to be more optimistic, empathetic, kind, and open-minded to not just the people that work hard to produce the new series, but to others and their viewpoints on them.

And so I leave this forum with a line from Captain Picard that I will always hold dear, and that many should really take to heart before its too late.

Your attempt to bring a more positive outlook on the CBS era was most appreciated. Sorry to see you go.

I am sorry to see you go.
I too have appreciated your energetic love for that is Star Trek and enjoyed sharing thoughts. But you should not have to feel doubt or darkness to disturb your well being. Should you choose to return, or remain away. Be at peace and happy.

Sorry to see you go. While I didn't agree with all your points about modern Trek I did admire your willingness to defend what you liked and remain positive about it in the face of a lot of criticism.

I personally feel Chuck has been very fair with modern Star Trek. I get the impression he is bored by it, and he doesn't like the universe revolving around Michael, but there have been no rants as of yet. He clearly hates Archer and Neelix with a passion that is not matched by any newer character.

Michael's focus and the dramatic cinematography.

Really I don't find it all that toxic or anything, and I'm not exactly expecting perfect reviews for anything.
