EPISODE ONE THOUGHTS:
* Timothy Dalton's peculiar brand of overacting works very well for comic books. He should have done them beforehand. Now I kind of regret he was never Batman after James Bond.
* The Chief keeping the fact his daughter survived from Cliff is pretty much a red flag this Chief is every bit as crazy and psychotic as the previous one. Then again, he was going to experiment on Raven.
* I think they went overboard with Larry thinking he was a monster because he was gay. Even if it was period-appropriate for the 50s to have such self-loathing.
* Brendon Fraiser looks like he's lived on nothing but cocaine and doughnuts since the Mummy trilogy. I'm sorry but it's true. It fits for the character, though.
* I wonder if the locals sabotaged the gang plank so Rita ended up in the water.
* I've never been a fan of Crazy Jane but I think she's a likable character here.
* I like the implications everyone here is immortal. It makes the anachronisms more interesting.
* Alan Tudyk as a supervillain is great but I already miss him from Powerless. That show was horribly written but everyone on the cast was awesome despite it.

The narration? The dialogue? The plot?

Re: Doom Patrol Season 1 spoilerific megathread
POWERLESS could never quite settle on a tone and the fact it was set in the actual DCU versus a kind of MAD Magazine version of comic books hurt it. It's difficult to treat the setting as a zanny ridiculous one ala the 60s Batman when there's half-a-dozen of dead straight comic book shows going on right at that very moment set in the same world. There's nothing inherently funny about being in a superhero world anymore (and I should know, I write a parody superhero series that has a combined 10,000 positive ratings on Audible).Slash Gallagher wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 6:24 amCare to ellaborate?

The jokes also fell flat in the fact that they could mention Batman and Wonder Woman but never had any superheroes actually show up except the Crimson Fox, Not-Fire (because they wouldn't let even Fire be made fun of), and the Centurion (who is a 90s supporting character to Superman). All of the characters except Vanessa Hudgens' are given writings as caricatures which hurts her character being someone they can play off of.
So they really needed to go one of two ways:
* Dial it down 50% and make it more like the Orville in that it's an incredibly quirky bunch of people in a serious world.
* Embrace the ludicrousness in a fictional world not related to the DCU--go full Tick, basically. Better Tick than the actual Tick remake.
Mind you, I watched the entire series so that it clearly was doing something right and I wish they'd had a second season.

No. Much like Spiderman and Superman, I've read a lot but nowhere near the entirety.
Why?

Oh, I just thought a big fan with such reverence for the material might be brushed up adequately.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 8:54 pmNo. Much like Spiderman and Superman, I've read a lot but nowhere near the entirety.

Well I love the show so far.
I just felt Powerless wasn't very good (but still enjoyed it). So I am glad to see Alan Tudyk (who was on Powerless as its co-star) back in a DC show.
