From what I see, this is a development-hell project. Started as a Birds-of-Prey movie, trying to bank on the same audience as the Suicide Squad viewers. Then they realized the potential of Harley Quinn and tried to expand her role, shoe-horning her in more. Result is at hand.

How is that development hell? You just described a normal development phase. They probably were going to headline her the whole time.

Development hell is like 5 years of rewrites at the very least.

I may be out of touch. But till this thread I did not even know this film had been released yet or was even out of development.

Also no Oracle? My interest just left.

I don't think it's unfair to remind everybody that there are two types of failure...

The movie happens to be pretty adored by anyone that actually cared to see it.

Yes though totally understandable that it's not precisely blockbuster material.

That is really good point. I guess we all needed to be reminded about that.

I was just poking a little fun at another really similar thread like this by someone attempting to substantiate why Captain Marvel a billion dollar movie out the gate is considered a failure, most notably by the audience score at Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, this movie is precisely the opposite of that, having a respectable audience score and general reception, but the movie is still passed off as progressive bait by the reactionary base.

The rated-R thing hardly seems a barrier to entry these days.
I might be wrong, but I think that "Joker" is the biggest windfall for DC aside from Aquaman and it is a rated R movie.
BoP seems to be doing what the comics have been doing forever and positioning Harley as a female Deadpool, and the rest of the team as a Cable-Domino-Colossus sort of supporting cast to the narrated mayhem.

I don't feel that the world is all that starved of R-Rated content right now, considering how many Oscar movies are in release/re-release and even the novelty of an R-Rated comic book movie is starting to wear off.
I do think the trailers are bad mostly in that I have seen them 700 times and they showcase Harley so much and I don't like her outfits, the weird pom pom jacket is ugly looking. The movie generally looks ugly to me. I prefer the sleeker presentation of Marvel.

BoP is well reviewed, but the DC universe (with one exception "SHAZAM!") has failed to appeal to me personally and I am willing to wait till it is on DVD.

LOL - and I have been proven right. Do you honestly not think that the well publicised failure of almost every modern DC film has not had an impact on Birds of Prey? Do you not think that there are those who looked at Birds of Prey and thought ''that looks too much like that shitty Suicide Squad, fuck that''?

Critical and commercial failure are different beasts and provable. Those previous movies made money and yet their looming shadow is now polluting everything that has come after it.

BTW, do you remember Disney Star Wars? Made a lot of money, yes. And has such terrible word of mouth that the original idea of having one movie a year has been canned. Countless spin-offs: canned. Two follow up trilogies: canned. Kathleen Kennedy: future not too bright. Solo: failed. Toy sales: diminished.

You still want to argue with me that short term monetary success is not as important as preserving your long term reputation?

It's too bad because this was infinitely better than the AWFUL Suicide Squad. I really only went to see this because Robbie was one of the few genuine highlights of that film and I thought putting her into a completely different kind of film with an entirely new cast was the smart thing to do, at least creatively. It doesn't surprise me that the R rating and the loose association with Suicide Squad hampered its opening. I would hope that the good word of mouth it's been getting will give this film strong enough legs to carry forward, but Hollywood is unforgiving. I'm just glad I got a good film at all with Robbie as Harley.

Only thing I was really poking fun at was the discontent for movies being progressive bait. Suicide Squad was just bad on its own and nobody thought of it as progressive bait. That being said, yeah this is infinitely better than Suicide Squad. Reminds me of how Star Trek reconceptualizes missed opportunity plots.. like the military squad meshing with Reed in season 3 of Enterprise being a reconception of the Maquis living with the Voyager crew.

Really though Captain Marvel didn't leave any apparent stink for Marvel Studios or anything.

Star Wars yeah started becoming a bit toxic but I've been doubting that they never much cared about anything past money lol. No direct evidence that they're really failing mind you.
