Odd overlay.

I have thought about installing Age of Empires III because I couldn't get the game to work when I originally bought it.

Is it any good?

Also don't get the joke about the paladin.
I got nothing to say here.

When I saw the word "Paladin" my dyslexia caused me to read it at first as "Pada'lin" like a southern person saying "Paddling" like one does with a Paddle.

I have played thousands of hours of Age of Empires III, I find that the changes they made to the franchise, able to train groups of units, restrictions on the number of certain buildings, less micromanagement, all of those things were benefits to me.

I have heard from fans of II that there is some kind of charm missing from III (I think it is nostalgia goggles) but I find II borderline unplayable at this point, and considering how III makes a point of having all the civilizations play different from one another (not just 1 special unit and and 3-5 things on the tech tree, but fundamental changes in what resources they need and what units they focus on) II feels boring to me compared to that variety of play styles.

And they are about to release another expansion to III, which in my opinion is a decade too late... but here we are!

I am frustrated with what they have advertised for IV, they are returning to the middle ages, which seems odd to me.

To me Age of Empires II is fairly simple. Build up a town, defend it while growing an offense. Or other the way around. The big thing you had to worry about was the trebuchet. Outside that, you can defend your base. I always favored calvary. I liked fast moving units to do what I need to do. Raid or do hit or run attacks. They also are more able to move around the catapults that can decimate any walking speed unit.

It does have its limitations of course but it is mostly limited by the technology of its time and the time period it's placed in too.

Honestly don't know what the micromanagement you are talking about. All of the units do their thing once you give them the assignment. Cut wood. Cool. Mine gold gold. Cool. You have to pay attention to the lumber guys from getting too close to the enemy and the farmers. Outside that you are fine.
I got nothing to say here.

I should also say I did just stop playing Star Wars Empire at War too.

That is fun if not annoying.

It is one of those things that no one would notice until they had played with a slightly more advanced AI. Going back to it made me so frustrated.

Ys 9: Monstrum Nox. Been a fan of the series for a while, and while I'd prefer a return to the style of Napishtim/Felgana/Origins, I'm still having fun with this one. And I can certainly appreciate that by this point Adol as been through so many adventures that absolutely nothing about being shot with a magical curse bullet to give him superpowers and trap him in the city to fight beings attempting to break into his dimension even phases him. He's just excited to have some more mysteries to solve in ancient ruins. At the part I'm at a trip to the Colosseum has him fondly reminiscing about the time he was tossed into one with a giant tiger monster as a form of execution for suspected regicide. And wanting to take a crack at the bull-fighting he's watching.

I like to imagine that every god and demon in the world is eyeing the city warily as that man is pretty much a walking Gotterdammerung and "Now there's two of him, oh dear US how is there now two of him?!"

Playing Star Wars Empire at War again. The galaxy conquest mode. This takes a long time to complete.

And frustrating. Because they attack you with a large fleet and you can definitely defend against it. But they do it often enough to just bog you down. I don't particularly mind areas of the galaxy where they take my planets. I always focus on one side and go from there. With a focus on having my main attacking force space and ground in one spot. Once I get to the point where I feel the fleet is big enough then I start building defense fleets.

Like Empire is 2 Imperial class SD and four Victory class SD. Rebels is five Alliance cruisers and five Corvettes. Zahn is the same with their analog.

Empire is the easier of the three because once you have Vader and his Super Star Destroyer you can definitely command space combat. Just don't use him for ground combat. That is a waste.

Rebels have the advantage that they can produce huge fleets pretty easily. Their MC30 cruisers for me are useless in fleets but the computer loves them and they are annoying as hell. Their big ships are dirt cheap. The MC80.
I got nothing to say here.

The paladin joke is about the SPOONY EXPERIMENT's review of the Ultima series where Spoony/Noah Antwiller goes utterly apeshit over the fact that the final game in the series has the main character (meant to be the original) go, "What's a paladin?" Which is a question that even fantasy noobs would get but seems especially insane given that paladins were major characters in the series and it dealt with ethics as a major undercurrent.

It was quite impressive to behold and is something of a geek meme.
