We've only had the two books since Ghost Story, plus some shorts/comics, and I for one thought there were a lot of fantastic moments in Skin Game (even if it seems like maybe Butcher doesn't quite know what to do with Murphy).

But then, I've always been a Michael fan, and consider Nicodemus one of the series' strongest villains as well. Plus I like how Butcher depicts Uriel.

So Skin Game was sort of fan service for me in that sense. ;)

Honestly, I liked a lot of Ghost Story too.

Cold Days... felt off to me.

Though perhaps its not fair to judge books I never finished.

I loved Ghost Story and Cold Days; I liked Skin Game, but in retrospect, it feels like a 'setup' story. That's not to say that there wasn't a lot going on in it, but it seemed to me that it was more about getting characters (Nick, Butters, Murphy) into their proper places for a future story, than it was about stealing the McGuffin in this one.

I also really hope there's another Dresden Files show in the future, just so Chuck has an opportunity to make another "Poor, dumb Harry" joke.

"Skin Game" seems to have been just that: setting the pieces back up on a new board after "Changes" smashed everything. But I thought it did it in an interesting way, offering us new questions and showing us the kind of things Harry might get mixed up in now that he's Mab's attack dog.

Unfortunately, it seems Butcher basically ran out of material he'd already had ready, and is now writing every book fresh. Hence the three freaking years since the last Dresden Files (doing "Cinder Spires" likely hasn't helped with that).

Eh, he's done 15 books. He's earned a break. He's still got what....5 years before he goes full Martin on us, right?

I don't read Martin, IIRC aren't his books usually in five year gaps? Or did I misread you as saying five years more instead of five years total until the next book?

Looking only at A Song of Ice and Fire, the gap between Feast for Crows and Dance with Dragons was 6 years, up 1 from the previous gap between Storm of Swords and Feast for Crows. So he probably has 3 years before he matches Martin's gap.

His schedule is inconsistent and but generally increasing.

It was 3 years between A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. Then only a year before Storm of Swords. Then 5 years before Feast for Crows, followed by a 6 year wait for A Dance with Dragons. It's been 6 years since that book came out, and Winds of Winter remains "forthcoming." So admittedly, I was exaggerating a bit when I claimed Butcher had 5 more years...but not that much.

However, something has changed with Jim lately. He used to pump out multiple books a year, and as far as I can tell, he hasn't put anything out since 2015. Hope everything is ok with him.

I must admit, I'm getting rather impatient waiting for the next book, especially since it looks like we're entering the final stretch building up to the apocalyptic trilogy Butcher promised us. Hope its worth the wait.
