According to a well cited Wikipedia article, this is true.

I think I lean towards the "it's not what you add, it's what you take away" school of thought.

95% of the time I'm in the broad strokes camp. Trying to preserve the spirit of the works matters more in my opinion.

Well, I have become less purist as time goes by. My favorite Harry Potter Movie is Order of the Phoenix. Even though it had a massive compression of content, it managed to achieve the filmic pacing, accessibility, and internal cohesion that the other franchise films have failed to do. Azkaban and Goblet of Fire, especially, struck me because they kept enough content from the books to be bloated and cumbersome, but they cut out enough material to be incoherent to somebody who hadn't read the book.

There is, however, something I consider an unforgivable sin in adapations. Casting thin actors to play fat characters, whitewashing, straightening-out queer characters, and the like. There are few enough roles to begin with in those categories, and as a writer who struggles to provide inclusive and diverse representation I find it particularly insulting. This is one reason I'm majorly pissed at American Gods, with their casting of Ostara.

Yeah...but....Kristin Chenoweth.

I get where you're coming from, but watching her chew the scenery was just delightful. I can't honestly fault Fuller and Green for failing to pass her up. I don't think I would have either.

So that is worth passing up every single fat actress in the nation?

Well, that's subjective, of course. But it's not like the producer was like 'Hmm...this character is fat in the books, but there's this super cute model that I'm pretty sure I can score with if I get her a part, so who cares if she can't act? She'll look good on screen!'

Instead, it's like, 'HOLY SHIT! Kristin Chenoweth is willing to do this?!? Quick! Say yes before she changes her mind!!!!' Because sure, she's tiny and thin and blond and beautiful, but she's also a ridiculously talented actress. (Actually, she's just ridiculously talented in general. God does not distribute his gifts evenly, that's for sure...)

I generally like things to stay pretty close, save allowances for the new medium, but I tend to be more forgiving of changes, especially if I think they are good changes, simply because it makes it a bit more worth watching.

There's plenty of ridiculously talented actresses who are fat, but somehow they only get casting calls when it's time to play the funny but single friend of the romcom heroine. Kristin has just about every other woman's role to choose from when it comes to casting.

if she'd done the christian bale thing and put on an extra 40lbs for the role, would that have made her an acceptable choice to you?
