Atleast it about actually treking.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 10:19 pm Just watched this episode and absolutely loved it. No, it's not a remotely serious take on Star Trek but it's basically GRAVITY FALLS meets STAR TREK and that's fine by me. Serious fans will love all the continuity nods and Easter Eggs.
Perfect.
Just think more Galaxy Quest than TAS.

Re: Star Trek: Lower Decks
I'm about halfway through this thread and for those who have read the whole thing:
"Is there actually any discussion of Lower Decks or is this just bitching about Discovery the entire way through?"
"Is there actually any discussion of Lower Decks or is this just bitching about Discovery the entire way through?"
Re: Star Trek: Lower Decks
discovery is the only thing that is recent enough to compare it to and it has the same people who ultimately sign off on the series so its a natural concern that the same major flaws of discovery will be in lower decks, so far they are balancing it better. its getting there but we will still have to see. im moving from skeptical about this to hopeful.

Re: Star Trek: Lower Decks
I think this show is so far removed from Discovery that it's impossible to compare it. It is very much derivative of RICK AND MORTY but as they were "sadistic deconstruction of Back to the Future", this is more "sadistic reconstruction of Star Trek" which has a pretty healthy existence to begin with.
Some starting thoughts on Episodes 1 and 2:
1. The thing about Boimler is he seems to me to be a nice adjustment of Wesley's concept. He's a teen genius who knows vast amounts of things from books but he doesn't have any real life experience because he's apparently grown up sheltered on Earth vs. Mariner being one of those kids who grew up on starships (and thus has lots of practical experience on starships). He has some of Wesley's annoying qualities but the fact that his book learning isn't immediately translatable to RL is something that balances them out.
2. Mariner is also a good character in the fact that she's throwing away a promising career because of her adolescent rebellion ala Tom Paris and his dad. The fact that her parents shoved her into Starfleet before she was ready is on them too.
3. The show really does go with the "Star Trek is actually horrifying if you imagine what it's like to be on these ships during these weekly nightmarish crises." The B-plot being a zombie plague while the antiheroes deal with a giant spider reminded me a bit of the Zeppo episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
4. Deep Space Nine did it first but another acknowledgement the chief use of holodecks is porn.
5. I appreciate we have another example of a competent Orion female who isn't just a slave girl.
6. I will do ONE SINGLE Discovery mention. The sad fact is that in two episodes I know more about the entire crew of this ship than I do about any of the characters other than Michael, Saru, Stamets, and Tilly. They throw in enough about the side characters like the Captain, Bajoran Security Guy, and Commander to give me a sense of what the "real" show would have been like.
7. I actually did think Ensign Barnes was kind of hot...for a cartoon. Shame on cyborg for ignoring her.

Re: Star Trek: Lower Decks
I see what you mean, however I personally think the distribution of "sadistic deconstruction" is a bit much, while Lower Decks isn't shy from showing that life of a Starfleet Officer isn't safe, and that space is full of danger, it also shows that it isn't something to run from or fear either (at least from what I've seen so far), it's like what Q said:CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2020 2:55 am I think this show is so far removed from Discovery that it's impossible to compare it. "If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid."
If this was Rick and Morty which is an incredibly cynically show, most if not all of the crew would have been killed in the zombie plague, and even the giant spider wouldn't be safe.
Something else that separates Rick and Morty from Lower Decks is it's characters, Lower Decks has really likable characters, that have each others backs, their kind to each other and there really is a sense of comradery, while in Rick and Morty (by design) are all terrible people who only just tolerate each other.
I think your comparison to Gravity Falls is more accurate, other than that, I pretty much agree with the other points you made.
"I think, when one has been angry for a very long time, one gets used to it. And it becomes comfortable like…like old leather. And finally… it becomes so familiar that one can't remember feeling any other way."

Re: Star Trek: Lower Decks
Am I the only one who could not stop laughing at the "Janeway Protocol" scene?
It was just last week that Chuck reviewed "Collective" and joked that Janeway would order the death children while holding a baby. It was fresh in my mind when Rutheford goes "Do the Janeway Protocol" and suddenly "ALL THE SHIP'S CHILDREN HAVE BEEN EJECTED INTO SPACE"
Had to pause it there, laughe liked a solid minute.
I'm quite liking the show, helps that none of the command crew acted like assholes this episode.

Re: Star Trek: Lower Decks
I'd almost think whoever wrote that was an SFdebris fan. Except in that case, it would've been the Picard Protocall.

It's entirely possible because the writer is the Twitter account writer of the Season 8 TNG Parody account and deeply plugged into the fandom.
Re: Star Trek: Lower Decks
i just want to know what exactly the janeway protocal is exactly, im talking about the exact listing of what to do because i have to know WHY are children being ejected into space?

Re: Star Trek: Lower Decks
It's not part of the protocol, just how badly Rutherford screwed up.
But if I had to guess, I'd say, "Break Time."
It's what she does most.
