A Leia movie is probably out of the question now since Carrie Fisher passed away at the end of 2016.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Sat May 26, 2018 9:04 pm I wish they'd saved the droid rights thing for a Leia movie. It's not a bad idea in and of itself, but I'd rather see it in a movie with the someone who is (1) a politician, meaning legal rights are part of her actual job, (2) has parents who are politicians, whom she may deeply love but not see eye-to-eye on, (3) is used to having subordinates, and (4) grew up in a house full of servants, many of them probably droids, and some of whom might have helped raise her.
Instead, it's in a heist movie.
Again, it's not a bad idea There was a senate until "A New Hope," so I think there was something quasi-democratic in there. And if you can build thousands of new voters an hour, each with values that make them lean toward one faction... You don't need stormtroopers.

Sorry, I was thinking more of a Leia prequel, with someone else cast as a younger Leia.cilantro wrote: ↑Sun May 27, 2018 5:07 pmA Leia movie is probably out of the question now since Carrie Fisher passed away at the end of 2016.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Sat May 26, 2018 9:04 pm I wish they'd saved the droid rights thing for a Leia movie

Oh sweet fucking Jesus, look I've just seen the film and this whole Droid Civil Rights has been massively overblown, trust me.

https://twitter.com/tvoti/status/998716344156631040I'm reminded of Chucks review of "A night in sickbay" for Enterprise, and how the viewer numbers dropped off and never recovered. I feel the same has happened with Star Wars since the Last Jedi's fallout combined with a loss of the Star Wars movie anticipation from the rapid release of new films.
Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story
Yeah, the "droid's rights" thing is a running gag, the film doesn't take itself that seriously.
Although I definitely wasn't expecting THAT cameo.

Re: Solo: A Star Wars Story
I wasn't thinking that it ruined the movie, just that it had potential to actually mean something in a different movie. I like moral quandaries in my action movies once in a while. My favorite scene in the X-Men movies (OK, my favorite scene not involving Rebecca Romijn as Mystique) was Beast resigning from the cabinet. Paraphrasing, they were talking about weaponizing a demutation drug.unknownsample wrote: ↑Sun May 27, 2018 6:25 pm Oh sweet fucking Jesus, look I've just seen the film and this whole Droid Civil Rights has been massively overblown, trust me.
Paraphrasing:
Admittedly, Star Wars movies haven't really been for deep thinking. Understandable, since when Lucas has tried to write something profound we end up with things like, "Only the Sith deal in absolutes."Beast: Have you any idea what slippery slope you're on?
President: I do. I also wonder wonder how democracy survives when one man can move a city with his mind.
Beast: As have I.

There's plenty about the ethics of cloning in TCW.
Considering all life indirectly originates from the Force planet, it's probable that completely artificial life in SW is impossible, you can't give droids the "divine spark" they're just very sophisticated crude matter.

I had said that the Star Wars movies aren't for deep discussion. You can get more into these things in TV or books than you can in a SW movie. The life / midichlorians argument I could see coming up in a discussion; for my money, though, even if droids aren't alive, some of them might be people.GandALF wrote: ↑Mon May 28, 2018 5:29 pm There's plenty about the ethics of cloning in TCW.

YMMV of course, and there may be no right answer. But we might be confronted with questions like this in actual life in a hundred years. Without the midichlorians as an element, unless Disney becomes even more powerful than anyone suspects.

Well, anyway, the film is actually pretty decent.
Kind of like Rogue One but with a slightly lighter tone and certainly better characters.
The action is drawn out a bit and it does have signs that it was two or three different movies spliced together beforehand, but the cast range from good to excellent (Glover IS Lando Calrissian), and I'd say its a pretty solid 7/10 movie.

Basically what I'm gathering is more or less what I expected, that this movie is a decent choice for a casual night out at the movies, but not worth going out of your way to see- a bit like Rogue One (though that one seemed to get a lot of praise contrasting with this one).
Unless I just happen to be out for a movie with some friends I imagine I'll be waiting for the DVD release to see this one.
