I do wish they hadn't used the "people being awful causes evil to grow in physical form" in the second one. Put that in present day and make it tied to the internet and you have a worldwide phenomena. Just change "this city" to "this world" and you have a screenplay.

Didn't some old script for Ghostbusters 3 have the Ghostbusters face off against the devil in the form of a Trump-like businessman? That would suddenly appear to be topical.

Eh, it would have been funny today if they had made it in the 90's and we could look back at the devil being Trump. But making it now and making it topical will just ruin it. They tried doing that with 2016, doing reshoots to insert jokes about them being harassed online for being women and it was easily the worst jokes in a film with plenty of choose from.

Don't throw politics in to Ghostbusters. Except for commenting on the lack of genitalia EPA employees have, that has always been fair game.
