Re: Avengers: Endgame
So I'm seeing here and there how Infinity War was a stronger movie. Redlettermedia for one.

I'm American (though I was overseas for 15 years) but applauding a movie wasn't a thing until after I came back (about 5 years ago). Personally I'm in camp be quiet in the movie theater camp, but this was not just at the end of the movie but there were cheers at various points. Mind you, it might be a difference between the midwest (where I was) and the west (where I am now) or I was going to different movies than the type person who cheers at inanimate projections during a movie and applauds the credits when no one involved is present.LavarosVA wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2019 2:40 amCould be an american thing, I dunno. I'm australian so that's where it happened.clearspira wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 6:45 pmDefinitely an American thing. You'd be mocked relentlessly if you clapped in a British cinema.Mecha82 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 29, 2019 6:27 pmWell she is super powered so that is to be expected from her. That said maybe because audience behavior isn't usual in here it does seem strange to me that people would give standing ovations instead of focusing on watching movie but I guess that's just cultural difference.

I've never seen it happen, personally.

Re: Avengers: Endgame
Just clapping in general like that I've heard a bunch of times.
I think a standing ovation would only happen for a movie like Endgame or Return of the King.

I've found Sydney audiences pretty quiet for the most part, but your opening night nerd crowd will applaud the good stuff - I feel like Lord of the Rings started it, especially Two Towers and Return of the King where you've seen the previous one prove itself, you go in on day one expecting to love it. The MCU's been pretty reliable in that regard - recent DC films as well. Infinity War is the first I remember there being cheers during the film, as well as the round of applause when it cuts to credits - for Cap showing up, then Thor's entrance to the battle. Endgame I just can't count the cheers, except that by the time the credits rolled every one of the main cast sign-offs got their own round of applause.
I like it, it's part of why I go on day one (besides being impatient, and generally fellow geeks won't be chatting or have their phones out during the film). It's not imagining the film knows you're cheering, it's a communal thing - sharing the moment with the people around you, even if you never say a word otherwise, and that's a good experience. I'll watch Endgame in attentive silence later, but on day one I'm celebrating my team scoring goals in the grand final.

Well Endgame's pretty much the only movie where I felt jazzed the clapping. Especially at what was probably the biggest moment in the entire MCU, just the way it was being shot I knew what the reveal would be. Audience went nuts for it.

What blew the reveal for me was just how public Evans and Downey Jr have been at wanting to leave. I feel like anyone who reads film news knew what was coming.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2019 12:23 am Well Endgame's pretty much the only movie where I felt jazzed the clapping. Oh that, that's another thing I think they executed perfectly in this movie. Biggest moment in MCU for me though involved Cap alone.clearspira wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2019 10:12 amWhat blew the reveal for me was just how public Evans and Downey Jr have been at wanting to leave.
