Most Hated characters in Sci Fi
Re: Most Hated characters in Sci Fi
At the start of Farscape, Pilot was the worst, though you actually need to wait for the backstory to come along to fully appreciate just how lame he really was. So many fancy external sensors and DRDs running around and he still complains that no one tells him anything. Though like many things on Farscape, they do turn the corner with him eventually.

You would love a filthy XENO? by the way X, every time I see one of your posts I keep thinking about which would be better, an Gurren Lagaan with Teddy Roosevelt Joining Kamina, or an alternate history story with Kamina as Teddy's Vice president.Admiral X wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2019 5:24 amHey now, don't you be badmouthing my waifu. *shakes fist*Beelzquill wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2019 7:22 pm Enterprise: I did not like T'pol, she was just boring at best and mildly bitchy at best

Either one would be pretty awesome, honestly.
And the T'Pol we got was somewhat lacking, which was why I reworked her along with so much else about ENT when I made Foundations.
I think Archer drove me up the wall a lot more than T'Pol, though, if only because he was often written like an entitled child yet we were apparently supposed to think this was the guy Kirk would have read about and been inspired by.

I actually do believe Kirk was inspired by Archer.Admiral X wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2019 5:49 am Either one would be pretty awesome, honestly.

“Hmm... what would Archer do? Oh, he would do this. Time to do the exact opposite!”
It’s even obvious with how they fight. Archer loses fights, and Kirk does the opposite. It’s easy to win a fight when you hit BACK instead of just get wailed on.
Science Fiction is a genre where anything can happen. Just make sure what happens is enjoyable for yourself and your audience.

Re: Most Hated characters in Sci Fi
Well, I mean... are we talking characters meant to be disliked by the audience (Sentinel Prime in Transformers Animated, Percy Wetmore in The Green Mile) or characters that aren't meant to be hated? I'll go with the latter.
Dr. Phlox for his arbitrary genocide and doing such a horrible thing in such a casual manner.
Rey, Holdo, and Rose Tico from TLJ, and DJ from Star Wars. The reason I dislike the first three has been discussed to death everywhere online, but DJ is bad in a rather special way, because say what you will about the first three, at least you remember that they were in the damn movie. That and I feel like his introductory scene is a prime example of what a terrible writer Rian Johnson is.
Anode from Transformers More Than Meets the Eye/Lost Light, mainly because she was a pointless character who served no purpose other than 'New Character for New Readers to Latch On To' and to pander to Tumblr. I loved More Than Meets The Eye. Loved it, yeah it started to get weak in its second half, but it was still good. Lost Light was the opposite, a slog of boring and increasingly frustrating plots with occasional bright spots of wonderful writing that we missed. Anode was just taking up page time from the characters the readers wanted to see, came off as an obnoxious fan character when compared to the others Roberts had created like Rung, Nautica, and so forth..., was a Lovable Rogue in a cast chock-full of Lovable Rogues, magically resurrected her girlfriend, and basically had no purpose to the overall story except one bit of exposition that could've have been summed up in another way. I mean, even the writer acknowledged how people hated the character, as in the seventh issue Nautica was going on about how wonderful Anode was, and in the next issue she desperately wants to get away from Anode, who she now views as an annoying twerp.

Oh yeah, I forgot Star Wars. It is very much a competition between Holdo, Tico and Rey... but I would pick Rey as she is in it more.
They'll have to go a long way to save this shitty character in this next film.

Re: Most Hated characters in Sci Fi
I feel like you really need the experience of a TV series or novel series to really get to know and despise a character properly. Two hours is just not enough of a character to really get them hated. While Jar-Jar is bad, the hate towards him is really towards the fact the entire movie is awful - Jar-Jar is just the most obvious manifestation of the fact the entire movie is a flaming crapheap, marred by unbelievable dialogue, bad performances (even from the good actors) and a bad plot.
In this I will nominate Felicity Smoak. While I didn't strictly follow Arrow beyond the first season, where it was kind of fun, she eventually became the avatar of bad writing. It finally culminated in the entire rest of the cast becoming cheerleaders while she hacked nuclear missiles. It was almost fun to follow along to discover what the writers would do with her next. Which was usually treat people like shit while the plot pretended she was completely in the right, everyone reacted as if they were chastised by God, then she'd solve all the problems with "hacking".
Basically imagine the unholy fusion of Doctor Polaski and Wesley Crusher, if that character was in charge of delivering Picard speeches.

From those three only one that I agree with is Tico. While Holdo had good reason to do what she did and Rey is Force user and thus guided by Force nothing that Tico did made sense. Just for that reason she is only SW sequel character that I don't like.clearspira wrote: ↑Fri Aug 09, 2019 6:57 am Oh yeah, I forgot Star Wars.
