Clearspira is laying down trans identity issues in the 24th century like no one's business. You would have never figured a classical liberal would have it all laid out for us?

I couldn't remember their names to save my life. Then again outside Michael and Saru hmi can't remember the others either.

With that said, they wrote them as a relationship. There is nothing specially different in how you would write about that relationship. With the exception of of them being a gay couple.

Come to think of it, they did give alot of screen time to the others with the exception of robot lady. She actually had an interesting concept that was so short lived.
Stamitz is only defined by his relationship/sexuality? He has a pretty strong supportive relationship with Tilly, and he is a crucial factor for spore drive travel in both seasons with accommodating repercussions for his endeavors. He's one of the most balanced characters on the show, just in my opinion.

Indeed, I really like that both Lieutenant Stamets and Doctor Culber are not written as stereotypes of what people think it means to be Gay, and I really like their story arc in Season 2, with Stamets first coming to terms with his loss, and then to be reunited only to nearly lose Culber again, and Culber actually coming back from the death and questioning what it means to be themselves and coming to terms with that (something Star Trek has rarely done).

And even with this great ongoing story of there relationship, they is more to them than that, Stamets not only being the one to develop the Spore Drive, which gives him a bit of an ego and because of his invention being used as a tool for war instead of exploration and having to report to Lorca made him understandably and for lack of a better term a bit of a prick, but as you say became a critical component to it's operation, and I love his interactions with both Ensign Tilly and Commander Jett Reno.

And while Culber didn't get much characterization in Season 1 beyond his supportiveness of Stamets and brilliant bedside manner before his brutal death, he really came into his own in Season 2, I love his confrontation with Ash Tyler and the kinship they share because of what happened to both of them.

I agree for the most part!

I think Culber is kind of 1-dimensional, just that they play rather severe sides, from gay and happy to dark and confused and overall changed inexplicably.

Stamets though has a lot of conceit for a character, but you see him take a step back as if he's not the only one in the room. Which isn't always done so organically on TV.

What Discovery does do pretty strongly as a Trek show is make it a pretty fluent team-based operative rather than a standard commissioned op that was hard to break away from for Trek. Wasn't done perfect of course, but works a lot better for a streaming effort. That's why I really loved Pike's introduction in the second season as a guest captain for the season, and also came to appreciate Lorca's written position for season 1 when I watched it again.

That's fair, I do like after the war that as Chuck pointed out that Stamets tones down his ego, and as I said it does make sense and doesn't feel out of nowhere.

But while I do see how you see Culber as 1-dimensional, particularly in Season 1, I don't feel his change was inexplicably, his reactions to being resurrected from the dead was completely understandable.

Indeed, Lorca was not only great the first time when we didn't know his true motives, but on re-watch it's amazing to see how much he plays everyone like a fiddle, and Captain Pike is also fantastic because he's the perfect representation of what a Starfleet Captain is, and I'm so happy that we are going to see more of him, Spock and Number One in Strange New Worlds.

Never said that. Only said it in the context of a relationship whether it's hetero or gay or whatever. His relationship to me seemed as natural as a sci fi show can allow them to be.

Of course he has far more going for him than just 'that gay character'. He is living conduit or computer or whatever he would be called for the Spore Drive. He helped develop it. He has a relationship with Tilly. He is also flawed.
I got nothing to say here.
