Fletcher felt unfortunately realistic to me. The guy who just wants to be everyone's friend, but is actually a fucking incompetent who can't do their job. Honestly, high social skills becomes a survival mechanism for the incompetent. What was unrealistic is how fast it came out, usually it takes the near side of forever to realize what's going on because they're so good at social manipulation that their shit gets covered up forever. But I guess as an ongoing plot that happens over four years it's not actually very funny at all. This show doesn't really have the continuity to have a really nice minor character that smooths things over and then keeps fucking things up for other people episode after episode. But doing what should be a long plot fast is very Star Trek (just not the good part of Star Trek).

Anyway, I enjoyed this episode. The funny shit was actually funny. The asshole aliens throwing things at them with the tractor beam was great. The security officer doing his best Season 2 Worf impression was great. The opening joke with the "what sound does the engine make" was full of win. This Starfleet isn't perfect, it isn't close, but it tries. And it has heart.

My take on Fletcher's situation is that he's a natural screw-up and idiot but very good at manipulating people as well as deflecting issues. However, the problem with the "Evil AI" he created is so big that he can't cover it up and his attempts to do so by shifting the blame are increasingly obvious. In the end, on the Titan, he hasn't built up any friends or connections to cover his ass so he gets fired.

Probably none, until you went and conjured it into existance by typing those words. Nice going.

I wish that Tendi and Boimler and Rutherford and Mariner would get some scenes.

Probably unsurprising considering that I hate Discovery and Rick and Morty both, but I hate Lower Decks.

This time, though, it's extremely personal and emotional. I identify quite strongly with Tendi because I, too, think that being a Starfleet officer would be the most awesome thing in the universe. So seeing her be the butt of the joke for the entire garbage premiere pissed me off on a deeply personal and irrational level, as I felt personally insulted.

Tendi is never the butt of the joke. She thought her zombie apocalypse adventure was awesome. As would I.

Boimler is the only one who ever suffers on the show. He's the Harry Kim and Miles O'Brien.
