So gonna dismiss Avatar because of a shit sequel? Mkay.

I'm denying that we live in a "golden age" of animation because of a shit sequel.

No human male who was of she-ra watching age when it first came out has nostalgia for it, because none of them cared about it back then. Therefor anyone raising a fit about how they've ruined it with these changes is doing so for the sake of performative Status Quo Warrior outrage, because seeing ladies that aren't fap-fodder-shaped on the teevee anger them.

I grew up in the 80's. I have nostalgia for some of those brands. Many of those overblown shows had good episodes, or memorable characters or music. Most of them, from THundercats to Brave Star to Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors to He-Man to She-Ra to Transformers to GI.Joe to Ghostbusters to Ninja Turtles to Legend of Zelda and Mario, or any other show of your choice, had strong pilot movies and some good memorable episodes along the way.

But by and large, they were bad. There were many many talented writers working on those shows trying to make them work, but the production schedules, budgets, inability to do continuity leading to a constant status quo villain plots being easily defeated week after week, and general animation field of the time just meant that... they ultimately weren't that good and haven't aged well. They just haven't. Any one of them you can probably pick out 10 or even 20 best episodes that still hold up. But then you're also going to find a lot of awful episodes, or even just forgettable nothing episodes, especially on the series that cranked out 65 episodes in a go, or did over a hundred episodes in just two or three years. (Ghostbusters for instance notably dropped in quality when they mandated Slimer become more prominent and Janine more girly.)

The early 90's when you got the Disney afternoon, the Speilberg Warner shows (Tiny Toons, animaniacs, Freakazoid, etc.), the next Transformers series in Beast Wars, plus stuff like Gargoyles, Batman TAS, Reboot, Exo-Squad, even things like Mighty Max... by and large hold up better than the 80's shows did. They all have their off episodes too, but the general quality was higher.

And though it's easy to take for granted given how long its run and the fact that the quality is lower now, THE SIMPSONS was a 90's show. (Yes, it premiered on Tracy Ulman earlier and started in late 89, I know. It was a 90's show.)

And the lessons and examples set then have been learned from and improved on since then. Animation tech has gotten better with digital animation and the writing has in general been pretty solid. Since it was specifically brought up, Last Airbender was incredibly solid, one of the pinnacles of american animation in the last 15 years . Korra wasn't as good, largely due to network meddling screwing with its production order, but it's third and fourth seasons were solid. We've also got things like Venture Brothers, Rick and Morty, Archer, Gravity Falls, MLP FIM, and even South Park though its also easy to forget given its long run,

And all that's not even getting into theatrical animation or the advent of CGI films, or the influence anime has had and how that's grown and changed.


The 80's shows you can be nostalgic for, absolutely. But go back and rewatch them First episode to last. They do NOT hold up overall.

The new She-Ra is decent, I've been watching it with my wife. It's not going on my top 10 list anytime soon, but it's decent. It's a fine kids show that will hit its demo hard, and it'll still be a fine kids show in another 20 years. The original SHe-Ra... (which is also on netflix) not so much.

Gotta say, I'm continually struck by how adorable and likeable these characters are, but the dorky cuteness doesn't in any way detract from the drama. Rather, it adds to it when we see these sweet little dumbasses come smack against a wall of entrenched violence and divided loyalties.

Just because I don't and you don't doesn't mean that no one does. The argument you're making has its basis only in ideology and frankly prejudice.

On the one hand, it's great if they're trying to be more inclusive and have openly gay characters, ESPECIALLY for a kid's show so that kids are normalized to the idea of gay people being normal folks earlier.

On the other tentacle, I kind of love the insane levels of phallic symbolism in the old He-Man and I'm kind of disappointed that that's not gonna be in. Oh, well.

That is not how it works in my experience. No one is born racist, homophobic or sexist, these things are learned. Little kids are happy to play with any other little kid no matter what they look like or what sex they are.
Its the attitudes of their parents that start them down that road, but peer pressure in Middle school is the killer because hating whoever the cool kids hate frequently nets you popularity points.
I'm not saying that cartoons for kids with gay people in them is a bad thing, I just very much doubt that they help normalize anything because little kids don't care about that sort of thing, its adults and teenagers working on their impressionable minds that does the damage and by that time a cartoon is going to do nothing to help them.
