LAFORGE: This is not good. Whatever hit the Vico must have set up an EM pulse that flashed through their computer banks.
DATA: Nearly eighty three percent of their records have been lost.
LAFORGE: And all of their sensor logs. Let's use what we got from our own sensors. I'll call up the structural analysis and the surface scans.
DATA: Geordi, as a child, did you ever experience a traumatic event?
LAFORGE: You're wondering about Timothy?
DATA: Yes.
LAFORGE: I was caught in a fire once. I must have been, I don't know, about five, I guess. It was before I got the first visor. And it was only a couple of minutes before my parents found me and pulled me out. And nobody got hurt, but I tell you that was the longest couple of minutes of my life. It was a while after that before I could even let my parents get out of earshot. It was like I absolutely needed to know that they were there, you know?
DATA: Timothy no longer has that kind of support.
LAFORGE: Yeah.

From TNG's "Hero Worship."

That doesn't necessarily make the case that visors didn't exist by that point, only that it was before he got his first. We also know that wearing visors actually cause pain, and I don't think it's something his parents would want to have put him through when he was just a child. Wearing it was ultimately a choice he made and decided to live with from then on.

I don't understand what a visor in Discovery should be a problem. It even looks less sophisticated than Geordi's visor.

I will defend STD here: we know that by season 2 of TNG the eye implants that Geordi gets in ''First Contact'' already exist. Pulaski offers them to him. I am guessing ''Generations'' changed his mind about his distaste for them.
Imo this implies that VISOR tech was actually quite old by TNG.

What they say in "Hero Worship" implies the opposite - it was quite new, or he would have had it when he was five years old, and just gotten a new one whenever he outgrew them. Like glasses.

Or the neural interface implants weren't suitable for someone younger than five. Or maybe the guy in Disco has a different kind of blindness, and a VISOR that could help someone with Geordi's requirements was still new in the TNG era.

Re: Star Trek Discovery season 2 megathread
Your first explanation works better, but did they ever bring up age difference in STD? Since this seems like a retcon, the responsibility is on them, not TNG, to make it work. The second explanation is just weak.
Hell, reminds me of what SF Debris had said about Scotty not being surprised by his VISOR. "He should be, otherwise that one blind woman would never have had to pretend not to be blind to go to the planet of the fuglies." Wait, so there's been blind people in TOS before? Again, it strikes me that these are TNG fanboys and not TOS fanboys. I have to wonder if they only know the most basic and superficial elements of TOS that are a part of popular culture.

It will probably depend on the reason for the blindness. In medicine, just because the symptoms are the same doesn't mean the cure is.
"We are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters."

There's been no detail given on Disco at all - so far as I recall the guy's never actually had a line (aside from maybe "Energising" where appropriate), he's just the transporter operator in the background of scenes. The idea I had with age is that perhaps Geordi got his VISOR at age five not because that's when the VISOR was first developed, but because that's the earliest age it was suitable to perform the surgery for him to get it.
Dr Miranda Jones (played by Diana Muldaur/Pulaski), she wore a dress woven with sensors which allowed her to 'see'. She had a personal issue with anyone knowing she was blind though, so the fact that she didn't wear a glasses-style device can't be taken to suggest there was no such thing - she wouldn't have wanted anything that signaled to people around her that she couldn't see normally.

Yuka's just moving the goalposts constantly, no explanation is going to satisfy him, because he needs to justify his hatred for Discovery even though you shouldn't need to justify any dislike of a TV show. See how he dismisses the explanation of the different type of blindness as "weak" even though it makes plenty of sense- its not like the human visual pathway is a simple one, and there are causes of blindness that don't even involve it.
But even ignoring that there's nothing stopping the VISOR seen in Discovery as being an earlier model or something, and he doesn't put in the minimal reading comprehension required to see that the conversation he posted doesn't say anything whatsoever about the VISOR being a recent invention in the TNG era.
