I think there is also a bit of hyperbole here to claim Legends did it to this extent. You can feel the fractures in LF management any time you sit down to read, while for the old EU, you get the sense of competent writers adhering to the singular vision. Which ties more closely to the spirit of the original trilogy than anything they have made since, even if on the surface it looks similar. Now, granted, the new EU does not sink anywhere near to the depths the old EU did, but the highs aren't as high as they used to be either. I mean, Rey went from being a nobody, to Palpatine's granddaughter, to a failed clone. Mr. Martin was even unaware of any changes to the novelization.

It's kind of a weird relationship here, where lots of fans and even fellow Hollyweird movers and shakers love the OT, and yet... they dislike the PT. It does have cringe moments and bad dialogue and confusing plot holes, but I suspect the feeling would be the same even if those were corrected. TV Tropes terms this "They Changed It, Now It Sucks." It's why lots of fanbases are never satisfied. I think people like Mecha82 are right to point it out. However, with this logic, even the worst among SWL has more of a claim to adhering to Mr. Lucas's vision than what LF has done since Disney, since we know they rejected his story treatments. Mr. Lucas is a liability... except when he isn't. What?
Gekired wrote: Sat Apr 25, 2020 7:48 pm Generally the old EU took notes and advice from George and expanded on his world. Now yes George did do stuff that contradicted the EU meaning major changes had to be made. Aka his Take on the Mandolorians completely screwing over what the EU had been doing with them up to that point.
My understanding is that they were probably building up to a reboot anyway. Mr. Hidalgo is on record among the old Dark Horse messageboards saying he's wanted one since 2006. And my suspicion is that Mr. Filoni was being brought aboard for the role, but then he might also be overselling his importance in connection to the production, and so once Disney bought it and owned the rights, when the likes of Mr. Iger, Ms. Kennedy, and as I suspect it, Mr. Filoni decided not to go with his ideas, no wonder he felt betrayed. And if the rumors are to be believed, they did it again, with his ideas for TROS.
Gekired wrote: Sat Apr 25, 2020 7:48 pm The New EU and Lucasfilm in generally just seems to have no direction at the same time their meant to be pushing new directions and characters and setting and so on. No one seems to be on the same page and everyone seems to be rushing to keep up with other people while those people are rushing to keep up with other people and rinse and repeat.

Then ya hear things like the story that got this thread set up in the first place and well here we are.
Mr. Martin is real with the fans. I appreciate that in contrast to those like Mr. Johnson. But their "just don't think too hard and enjoy it" mantra is the avatar to their management policies. And sad to say, there is nothing he can do about it. He just tells you the way it is.
Gekired wrote: Sat Apr 25, 2020 7:48 pm Now I will add that yes their are people who enjoy the new Disney canon. I do not get why myself but i shall respect their right to do so. But i ask then same curtsy be returned to me for not liking the New EU overall. Lords knows the nightmarish response the media had to those who didn't like ep 8 and the constant name calling and declaring them members of hate groups and so on really didn't help anything and probably made the current division in the fandom so much worse then it would have been
The problem here is how LF went after the fans, or the toxic brats drowning out the voices of actual criticism, is precisely the way the old-school EU fans have been ostracized and ridiculed since 2014, although that seems to be on its way out. I do appreciate the Disney canon for rendering many of the arguments back then null and void. And, you know, in not conducting themselves better, it drove the fans who were on the fence further over to the other side. It does require two to argue, after all. But they have influence, are in the public eye, and need to shape up their act as official representatives to the brand.
