A common issue with any kind of resistance group is that they are usually just random people who's only connection is that the current regime is a threat/obstacle to their goals. You will have professional soldiers trying to restore the old status quo but also criminals trying to escape justice, radicals trying to push some kind of agenda, black marketeers looking to make some quick cash and even a few people who just like to blow things up. Getting them to function as a proper military unit would be very hard even under the best circumstances.

Resistance Fighters is a weird term of art and not what it reads as.Wookiepedia wrote:The Resistance was a private military force that opposed the First Order and defended the New Republic.
Re: Why Palpatine Influcing Kylo Ren was a Bad Idea
Here's something that's always bugged me WHY are they called the Resistance? The First Order is a terrorist group that is NOT recognized as a official government. It made sense in the Original Trilogy and in other series like She-Ra it also made sense because the Empire and the Horde WERE seen as a legitimate Empire with the greater power and those fighting against them were Rebelling against said Empire.
The Resistance is yet another good example of Disney and Lucas Film attempting to copy and paste the Original Trilogy without understanding what made it work and thus is just a pale imitation of what came before. Why are the heroes a Resistance when they are, from all we see in the films, backed by the ACTUAL government fighting a group of terrorist.
To look at The Thrawn Trilogy the reason the Imperial Remnant referred to the New Republic as the Rebellion was because they refused to see said New Republic as a legitimate Government. It was an act of spite to try and cover up the fact that they got their collective @$$es handed to them and that their Empire had fallen to group of "Rebel Scum".

I guess you could argue they call themselves 'The Resistance' as they see themselves as fighting against a government that has become hopelessly corrupt.Winter wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 12:31 amHere's something that's always bugged me WHY are they called the Resistance? For TDST, I think they should have flipped the dynamic from the OT. The First Order would be this small group of well armed Anti-Republic militants who are willing to attack both civilian and military targets; a kind of dark reflection of The Rebel Alliance. New Republic would be more like the Empire, the dominate military power which can now draw upon the resources of an entire galaxy, but likewise must defend said galaxy. This would explain why its up to our heroes to defeat The First Order, because the fleet is busy guarding the Republic itself.
Re: Why Palpatine Influcing Kylo Ren was a Bad Idea
I know. It was one of the questions I had after seeing TFA. In the movie, there was a Republic and then the First Order. Then the Resistance. It was never really explained why there should be a Resistance. My running theory at the time was that the Republic was too soft against the First Order and that was how the Resistance was formed. To oppose the First Order.
Doesn't explain how the First Order came to be. And why would the Republic which we would assume have alot of members of the old Rebels of decades ago, not resist a see ond incarnation of the Empire?
Thats just from the first movie. The other two make it even more cloudy.
I got nothing to say here.

We already had the tiny group versus the huge group in the Prequels.
I would have just had the First Order be the result of the galactic civil war not ending in a victory but a premature treaty. Leading to a Cold War and the realization you can't let fascism stay around.

You mean the Original Trilogy. Prequels, the Clone Wars was basically fought by near equals.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 11:43 pm We already had the tiny group versus the huge group in the Prequels.

Tying back to The Thrawn Trilogy for a moment one thing that I liked about it as a sequel to the first two Trilogies is how it brings everything full circle and that includes how powerful the opposing sides are. TPT starts with two armies that are, as CharlesPhipps put it, near equals while TOT has the war being fought between the overall weaker rebels and the seemingly infinite Empire.McAvoy wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 4:27 amYou mean the Original Trilogy. TTT is interesting as both sides are trying to recover from the battle of Endor and are therefore on more equal footing. Thrawn himself notes just how weak the Empire is and spends the first two novels trying to locate a lost fleet of Dreadnoughts that are actually weaker then a regular Star Destroyer just to try and tilt the odds in his favor.
TDST is just TOT only now it raises more questions because the First Order is and the Resistance are buying from the black market which raises the questions of who solid the First Order the more advance weapons, where the Hell did Starkiller base come from and if arms dealers have this sort of fire power then why are they selling it instead of just using it to take over the Galaxy? If it was a case of just buying out old ships like what we saw in TOT that would be fine but how are they getting the supped up version of the Empire's toys?
