And I don't mean that the term Gary Stu would have been used instead because that's practically never used.MrL1992 wrote: ↑Tue May 28, 2019 10:47 pm In regard to Star Wars. But what the heck does it have to do with them being diverse? The accusation so many want to make. How would have the standard Caucasian male majority have changed anything?

Anybody that uses the term SJW unironically should not be listened to.
Re: Let's get down to brass tacks... (SJWs/influence in movies)
I do agree with that. After all they also tend to use that over everything resulting over use of that label that in that un-ironic way. Those people just tend to be among loudest ones in order for them to get attention because more often than not it tends to work. Just like children that are loud to have adults' attention.

SJWs are like any political faction. Some good, some bad. Some moderate, some more extreme than others.

Sorry, I'm going to have to be a little skeptical when I can't find your sources and what I do find seems to say that Brooks got the role on merit (though accepted it at least partly for representation reasons). Especially given his own remarks here:MrL1992 wrote: ↑Thu May 30, 2019 12:10 pm As I already mentioned, they were open to other a tots of different ethnicities but primarily wanted a black actor. They aren't going to write that down on a casting call though. Not every fully 'open' casting session is that in reality. They often know what they want but remain open if their desired description cannot be met by the right actor.

I'm not calling you a liar; I'm just saying that, given contradictory sources, I'm not convinced.

Because both factors can be true? He got it both because of ability as an actor and because he matched their desire for a black actor. That why they were open to other ethnicities just in case no black actors they auditioned were up to it or another actor of a different race were to exceptiohalky atand out.Darth Wedgius wrote: ↑Fri May 31, 2019 9:02 pmSorry, I'm going to have to be a little skeptical when I can't find your sources and what I do find seems to say that Brooks got the role on merit (though accepted it at least partly for representation reasons). Again, its in the second 'Fifty Year Mission...' book. They book is a mix of fresh interviews as well as extracts from old ones so there may be other sources out there.

It does make lot of sense that while they had black actor in mind they kept option open for actor from other ethnicities just in case. I am happy that they got Avery Brooks not just because he made one awesome Captain Sisko and is talented actor but he was also ethnicity that they mainly wanted for the role so he was everything they wanted. So much so that I can't think anyone else or some one who isn't black in that role.

Pay attention how there is bascially only one episode at all, where Sisko being black is made a theme and it's the one episode where he switches positions with Benny Russel, the novel writer in 1950s' New York.
Incidentally this is also how you write a good black character: You do not draw attention to his skin and treat him like every other human character in your play. This creates true equality. His skin-colour just did not fucking matter, as it should.

Interesting enough I don't remember it coming into play in Past Tense were he was taken to "Sanctuary District" by two police officers. It could had but it didn't. Then again it's possible that I could remember that wrong. If I remember that wrong then I might need to watch Chuck's review again to refresh my memory.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2019 12:27 am Pay attention how there is bascially only one episode at all, where Sisko being black is made a theme and it's the one episode where he switches positions with Benny Russel, the novel writer in 1950s' New York.

Well yeah it shouldn't matter. It's just that I can't image anyone else than Avery Brooks who happens to be black in that role. IMO he owned that role so well that any alternative wouldn't just feel the same regardless of ethnicity after we had seen him in that role during entire run of DS9.

I doubt it was a motivation. They literally just thought they were bums. There was the meta commentary, though. And subtle. The two colored people were thrown into ghettos. The pretty white lady got to mingle with the upper class.
