Yes, it was mostly ill thought out patchy trash.
They will pull out the parts that they think are worth saving, much like when DC reboots their universe for the sake of simplifying things. Except here such a reboot makes MORE sense because of the amount of obscure drek that is out there that the typical audience member just doesn't give a shit about.

Continuity porn has EXTREMELY narrow appeal. Just look at how "Solo" performed compared to "The Last Jedi". "Solo" provided answers to questions no one was asking about a character whose appeal is 99% summed up with the phrase, "Harrison Ford", and they answered those questions in such a boring and obvious fashion that it makes me wonder why they bothered. I don't need an explanation for "Chewie"... I am a person who understands what a fucking nickname is.

"Jedi" by contrast went forward with the narrative rather than backward. It answered lots of questions, but did so in a way that (basically) mocked the very idea of continuity porn. "They were filthy junk traders. Sold you off for drinking money. They're dead in a pauper's grave in the Jakku desert. You come from nothing. You're nothing. But not to me." And thank christ for that.

Yes - because the majority of fans only know the films and only care about the films. That sucks for those that followed the EU, but majority rules. Telling those fans to suddenly give a monkey's about these thousands of characters and events they nothing about is an impossible sell.

It's worth noting that Disney have borrowed a lot from the expanded universe.

Disney is big on keeping control of their narratives and don't want to be hemmed in by lots of 'soft' canon. The old rule Lucas used was. Sure it is canon, till something he put on the screen said otherwise. The Thrawn trilogy was basically scrapped the moment the clones turned out to be the Republic's troops and not an enemy's.

They should've just said "We're wrapping up outstanding plot threads, but that's it", gone with the Legends branding as OTL, and basically spin it off into an alternate timeline like that. Try to leave good feelings.

Don't cut it off in the middle, especially not if you're trying to sell stuff like Solo that depends largely on fan demand.

Don't stick with the old EU, it's a fool's errand and half of it was crap anyway.

Maybe canonize the Thrawn trilogy--Hell, make those into the new movies if possible! Fans would love that.

Basically, they had a good idea, poor execution.

So what did did Kotor and SWTOR do to deserve this?

KOTOR is nice but it's gone off the rails since The Old Republic.

Besides, John Jackson Miller has said they're releasing a Omnibus collection of his books soon so KOTOR the comic and other material aren't going away.

I think of the Legends universe as not "thronw away" but an alternate canon now.

A video game with different endings and an MMORPG were never going to be true canon anyway. But with Disney at least giving a nod with 'Legends' they exist. But not necessarily as we see them.
