Yes, it's rather meant as a pilot movie for an American series that never happened. So the Doctor explains things that aren't known to his companion during the movie that longtime fans would know, but a new audience would not.

Its designed to be ''My First Dr Who'' so you'll be good. But really, if you've never watched Who before, start with Eccleston. That was also designed to introduce Who to a new generation.
