Trek kinda tries even if it fails in most of it's social commentary. At least the onscreen version of the Mirror Universe they threw their hand up and yelled the HELL WITH LOGIG, the more EXXXTREME!!!!!!!!!!! the better.
SEX it up and take the backstabbing to over 9000!!!!!!!!!!
I imagine some people who experienced dictatorships have a hard time processing this take.

Here is my take on the whole "could having x topic in the show offend someone hurt by x".
The intention behind the idea in a lot of instances has almost as much bearing as the idea itself, and then how that idea is implemented. Did whoever come up with having the Mirror Universe back even think about what you asked? I very much doubt it was any consideration at all. I would think they came up with it on the basis that it would let them go nuts with other ideas, it should be this huge smash with most fans, and they could get away with just being plain silly with just about everything. In that regard I don't see why one would be offended. Dislike/disagree with it, go nuts on that front.
Same with the Laura Roslin and her breast cancer story in BSG. Many families now are impacted by such things. I would really despair if you could find one person offended by that story. Emotionally impacted in other ways, sure - like my family was too when watching it. It was used as a key thread for both the character, overall story and very well done.
The ideas and implementation on what came out in say the likes of "Threshold" or "Dear Doctor" - Now I find those offensive!!!
All IMHO of course.

I think what most of the mirror episodes are trying to show is how one choice can lead to different factors.

Why?
Most of them are probably more offended by the Federation being an ultra-leftist utopia.

Why do you speculate that?

Mostly because I know people who live in Venezuela who talk with a hiss and a gnash about anything which smacks of socialism due to the country's current issues.
The Federation being a Ultra-Leftist state.
The Mirror Universe is just a comical empire. Not something seriously forwarded as a path for human advancement.

A lot of Eastern Europe does not feel that way. There are many perspectives within the sub group i mentioned in the OP.
