So, undead and demons in dragon age I understand, the former being corpses inhabited by the latter, but what's with the ghosts?

I've dealt with the dwarf ghosts in the deep roads, the couple of elf ghosts in the werewolf ruins, and the ghost orphans, but I didn't really see much...resolution. Maybe the last thing wasn't resolved because I failed to keep the templar alive, but I dunno. I just don't really...get them.

The dwarven ghosts especially. Why are they there? There's some vague note about a "bad" part of The Stone, but is that all the explanation we get? Why do they attack you? Why are they fighting alongside golems? Are they just general pissed-off ghosts from the first war with the darkspawn?

Demons come through when the veil is weak to exploit mortal failings and possess mages. Undead happen when they settle for a corpse and go a bit wonky. But ghosts...do they just show up when the veil is thin too? There was no suggestion of the Fade bleeding through in the deep roads or the orphanage. Why are some of the dwarf ghosts "forgotten" instead of "enraged"? Is there a story element I missed?

In actuality, no, there is an answer for it but it's a weird ass answer and isn't given until DLC for Inquisition.

Dragon Age has gigantic skyscraper sized gods called Titans who dwell in the Earth and lyrium is their literal blood. Dwarves were apparently made by them. The ghosts of dwarves are due to the fact they are not actually returned to the stone as they're supposed to, which is that they have their spirits supposedly merge with the Titans (whether this is true or superstition is anyone's guess) but it's why dwarves are so terrified of leaving the underground to live on the surface because they have literal evidence it's possible to become a damned wandering soul unremembered by their families.

As for ghosts, spirits actually exist in Dragon Age as we see by entering the Fade. Your consciousness goes there every night. Ghosts are those spirits who get caught in the Fade when it bleeds over from damage to the Veil.

The Brecillian Forest is ALL SORTS of messed up due to the events of Winterfang's summoning. She's NOT a demon, though, but her presence does warp the forest a huge amount and allow ghosts as well as spirits to bleed through.

As for the Orphanage, it's right next to the Blood Mage's den where there's an entire Anti-Circle practicing black magic. Alternatively, there has been forwarded the idea that great violence and terror like the slaughter of the elven orphans weakens the Fade--in which case the world is fucked.
