Superman No More

So what are your opinions on the news that Henry Cavil is no longer Superman? Personally I never liked his films for the simple reason that my favorite Superman isn't anywhere near this era. I don't want dark, brooding Supes; I want the one that George and Chris Reeves played, that Dean Cain played, the animated version from the Justice League cartoon etc. Cavil simply is not a Superman that I want or need. (No slight on you if you liked this Superman).

That said, I also want DC to do well as the Marvel monopoly really is not a good thing. IMO I think they should ditch the shared universe (or only reference in occasionally), bring back the Silver/Bronze Age version of the character, and focus more on superheroing rather than melodrama and blowing s**t up.

Superman done well should be the biggest superhero film we have ever seen. He is more famous than anything Marvel has got, his secondary characters are as famous as he is, and his rogues gallery is second only to Batman.

Famous and boring. Your character is blessed. It had a great run. I will probably be dead before i will see Alien Legion as a series or a movie.

Also you don't think a studio can just grab a character from an other baddies villain gallery? Barely anyone reads comics so that does not matter if the product is good?

I honestly don't think you can do better than Man of Steel 1 at the box office with him.

Inflation-adjusted, Superman 1978 did over $530 million. So you COULD do better, just not sure if you can still do better nowadays after everyone's gotten used to superhero movies.

It would require more luck and Superman is a boring Age of Innocence 30's superhero. He is supersquare and supercompetent.

One thing done right with the new Superman, was Henry Cavil. Outside of that, not that much, yeah. But seriously, don't blame him for the shortcomings of the movies. Like Affleck, he's the least responsible for the failings and was actually pretty good.

I forget which reviewer it was I watched on the subject of Batman vs. Superman, but they said something I happen to agree with. They said that it was a misstep to make Superman dark and brooding, because not only did it not really fit the character, but it meant there was a real lack of contrast between Batman and Superman.

Of the Superman films I thought Christopher Reeves in the first movie was great. From the man commenting on the 'nice threads' to the quick back and forth of. "I've got you ma'am." "You've got me? Whose got you!?" It had a good feel of a world that had never seen a super hero suddenly having one as a guardian angel.
To me, I think what we need is similar to Lois & Clark. A movie showing Clark Kent finding his place. And part of that is helping like no one else can, as the big blue boyscout. Yes he is a true good and benevolent hero. Save brooding for the second or third movie. Let him come out with cheesy grins and hope for a change. Because like a Marvel's Spiderman, that goes on till things get serious. And don't be afraid to bring out a villain other than Zod or Luthor. Or if Luthor is there, let him be the power behind the threat. So Superman knows, but can't touch him. This probably was done in Smallville. I know it was done in the DCAU. But those were when it was recognized to be a success. So why not emulate it?

Spiderman is a teenager so it comes of as cute and not hopelessly naive.

i don't consider Man of Steel dark and brooding. Compare to what else is out there it's not.

Superman can be done right, it's just...very hard. Part of the problem is Superman The Icon eclipses Superman the Character so easily.

Frankly I'd be surprised if any of the yahoos in charge would let a decent Superman movie get out of pre-production Tartarus.

Sorry, I was comparing how Spiderman is all quips and jokes. If he goes silent and serious it is time to run.
Superman is supposed to be that hopeful guy who you know things are really bad when he goes as serious as Batman during a fight. He is supposed to have some contrast in situations. A little more character in the Icon.
