Just wondering what you guys thought of it? Not going to lie, I think it looks like a very unfaithful adaption to the point that they have made a franchise that at one point was considered a serious contender to Harry Potter look generic as hell. No other way to say it: It looks like Spy Kids. And not the good Spy Kids movie either.
And yeah, going to get into everyone's favourite topic: gender and race swaps. Commander Root now being female DESTROYS Holly Short's main plotline throughout the first four books until she is turfed out of LEPrecon and that is the fact that she is the first female in the unit's history. And the book does not shy away from showing us just how much sexism that she has to face on a daily basis. Root was her commander but also a kind of father figure that whilst initially seeming to be a sexist bully like everyone else, in fact holds her to a higher standard because she is the test case. If she fails, it will be seen by the media as women are incapable of being cops. He genuinely wants her and women in general to succeed. By making Root a woman you've just rewrote the story to Dark Tower standards.
And speaking of the Dark Tower, its not making Butler black that bothers me, its the fact that he is described as Eurasian in the book, meaning that they've tried to diversify him by race swapping a character who is already diverse and underrepresented in film. Its just so pointless.
There are other problems too: Butler with a bow and arrow, the elves are too tall, the magic is too magical (I know, sounds strange, but the Fairy folk do not have that much magic individually. They can turn invisible, heal and control minds, not throw around blasts of energy).
I think they've made a film by people who don't understand the books and they've made it for young children - which is a serious problem as I would say the franchise is and always was far closer to the YA genre.
