introduced the Romulans to the Federation and began to set-up a possible story arc that utilizes information gained from prior installments of the franchise (The Romulan War).
began to deal with the beginnings of the Federation and thus further played into the continued continuity of the franchise, treating it as a boon and well of ideas to drink from.

I agree with Chuck: it was ''all right''. It would have made for a fantastic first season because that is effectively what it was. It was ENT 2.0, just as season 3 of TNG was 2.0, and arguably season 4 of VOY was 2.0. It just lacked a bit of spit and polish for me.
If it had had a season 5 under Coto then I feel as if wouldn't have had the Abramsverse because the reboot would not have been needed.
-It feels more like Star Trek somehow.
-An effort was made to make the characters actually likeable.
-The writing is, generally, better.
-I like trying to tie the stories they were telling in with the rest of the universe. They probably overdid it (resulting in "small universe syndrome at times), but it was a good move overall.
Not to go against the spirit of the thread, but even with those good things in mind I think season 4 is kind of overrated. It benefits by being compared directly with a couple truly dire seasons in 1 and 2, but it isn't filled with unforgettable classics or anything.
I'm a season four fan same as most everyone else, so to vary it up a bit:
I like the season 1/2 title sequence. Not so much the song, although I don't hate it - I like the quiet start, not so much by the time the chorus kicks in and it's all "Myy Warp Cooooore's Powered By Looooooove", but 'it's been a long road' and the medley of exploration, from your bunch of yahoos on a raft up to spacecraft... pretty cool. Helps that it's something different compared to the other Trek title sequences. The version (which I think was the original idea?) with Archer's Theme instead is better, but even with the dulcet tones of Secular Christian Soft Rock propelling our heroes onward, I'm okay with it.
They messed it up when it got reworked with the Casio keyboard backbeat though.

Season 4, while lacking the spark that made shows like DS9 good, at least had the nuts and bolts of writing a TV show down, something that earlier seasons of Enterprise largely lacked outside of a few season 3 episodes. Manny Coto delivered material that actually wasn't unwatchably bad despite the Great Satan of Berman and Braga making a concerted attempt to forever damn the show through aggressively incompetent writing.
