Anyone else played Wildstar?

Post by SuccubusYuri »

Just curious to see if anyone else played it and enjoyed it?

For the uninitiated, Wildstar's an MMORPG with a story that aims for Asimov's Foundation by passing through Duke Nukem's neighborhood. A lot of tongue in cheek humor, but if you let it distract you you'd miss a really layered narrative.

It also earns a distinction as; some Doctor Who review Chuck did, he said "If I make a sci-fi show, I'm just gonna make everything look like it was built in the fifties on purpose". Wildstar is that story, with tesla coils and by all appearances rustpunk starships that run on plutonium. You know, Ratchet and Clank type stuff.

Anyway I've been playing again for a few weeks, and I am still amazed at how complex they bothered to make the Dominion. Normally the evil empires are very one-dimensional, or any depth that is given is token, at best. And while the Dominion does provide order and keeps the trains running, I am always impressed when the Vigilant Church deems the comic relief Lopp unfit for conversion not because they are dumb, but because they fail to grasp the concept of "charity", or how they view the various natives of Nexus as their kin because both had served the Eldan.

It manifested oddly in chat; someone made the comment "I'm really impressed that there is no faith-based culture in Wildstar". Carbine wrote such a deep tapestry for their empire that people can't even recognize it AS a faith-based culture even when it stares them in the face. Of course that could just be a Richard Dawkins thing "It's not religion without a bearded man in the sky" filter making people blind to ancestor worship but still. xD
