This feels like a College Humor video satirizing the trend of turning exuberant children’s pulp adventure narratives into facile, navel-gazing serial killer stories.

It’s also by the guy that’s best known for making fratboy movies like ROAD TRIP and the HANGOVER trilogy. I have very low expectations of this.

I actually liked the first teaser a bit better. I'm on board and all, just I didn't really get anything extra out of this trailer.

Those are pretty respected movies though.

Honestly I'm tired of Hollywood trying to make F#d up villains like Joker, Michael Myers and Light Yagami sympathetic anti-heroes while demonizing good guys in order to justify said villainy. Case in point, and spoiler warning, in this film Thomas Wayne will be a sleazy politic who plays a big part in Joker's decent into madness.

They did the same thing with L in the Netflix movie of Death Note, making him an unstable man child who has no control over his temper in order to make Light look good by comparison and with Michael in the Rob Zombie Halloween films by making his family as unsympathetic as possible so he would look good by comparison.

One of the reasons I like the Star Wars Prequels is that it DIDN'T try to make the Jedi out as terrible people but not to make them paragons of virtue either. Yoda, Obi-Wan, Mace and Qui-Gon were all good people who weren't cruel idiots but they were flawed and, at the very least, a little bit arrogant. And Anakin, when he's not being a whiner, is also presented as a good person but one who Is selfish and short tempered and is blinded by his love for his wife and children to the point that he will do anything for them, even if it means making a deal with the devil.

This is why the Joker movie, doesn't interest me as it seems to be going the easy way by making Joker as sympathetic as possible and making everyone else so horrible that he looks good by comparison. There is really only two ways this movie can go, either A) it takes the Venom route and makes Joker a anti-hero or B) It makes him the villain we all know him to be.

If A happens then it will likely making Joker less interesting as what draws so many people to Joker is the fact that he is such a horrible person. And if B happens then What Is The Point of Caring What Happens To Anyone!? Everyone is a terrible person and the few good people are likely going to die horrible deaths so why bother getting attached to them at all? And again, they're apparently making Thomas Wayne, one of the Two people that inspires Bruce to become Batman for the good of Gotham into a sleazy politic just to make Joker look better so we'll likely just be waiting around for him to die instead of actually caring about what happens to him.

For whatever its worth, I felt like this movie is probably trying to be like the 1976 movie Taxi Driver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUxD4-dEzn0

There seem to be definite similarities. Keep in mind, while Travis Bickle did have some sympathetic qualities, the movie also made it clear he was a dangerous nut.

I can understand not liking edgy superhero stuff, but DC is coming out with Shazam soon, which seems pretty light. Plus all of the goofy marvel movies. Having an occasional edgy comic book film isn't a bad thing, as long as it doesn't become the norm.

The Joker is overused. Bored with him tbh. And it doesn't help that Ledger did such an awesome job that the peak of the character has already been reached.

Martin Scorsese was the first name I remember being attached to this project. For whatever you can say about the Joker's redundancy, the fact that Scorsese was still somewhat involved has me interested.

I think mentioning Scorsese is especially important to consider in regards to Winter's complaint that making the Joker evil might make the movie boring or pointless. Scorsese basically specializes in making movies about people you should hate, but enjoy watching nonetheless. Goodfellas, The Departed, TWoWS, you name it.

Now of course, this movie no longer has Scorsese attached to it- we have Todd Phillips who has an (IMO) uneven resume, but certainly not a terrible one. I wouldn't dismiss the movie out of hand for the concept alone.

Most versions of him don't appear to be as grounded as this version appears to be. I am genuinely intrigued by Joaquim Phoenix' approach to the character. It doesn't fit 100% into any of the other characterizations-schemes so far and this combination piques my interest. It is roughly in line with Heath Ledger's version, displaying him as both crazy and extremely aware of the realities surrounding him, without making him a cackling mess like so many other incarnations of the characters (not criticising Hamill-variants, but simply appreaciating a very different approach).

P.S.: I think this sums it up nicely:
