What would most likely be the next Legends era to be recontinued?

Post by Yukaphile »

As people here might know, my view on Legends decanonization has evolved rapidly over time. In the past two years, I've gone from being enraged to learn to more focus my criticism and how I feel. Frankly, these days, I'm happy it ended, but let's just assume it was to be picked up out of stasis and it was resumed, continued alongside "canon" like some fans are asking, which is then given some kind of new name too. What Legends era do you think they'd revisit? Just curious.

Honestly I think's it's most likely that Disney would first star by adapting the Legends with the Thrawn Trilogy being the first and after that's done, and if it's a hit, then they will likely start the Legends continuity properly, likely retconning a number of stories and bringing in some of the STL's best writers to help give the series a sense of legitimacy.

This all depends on who the next couple of Disney EU stories do. If most of them are seen as truly great stories then it will be a while before Disney brings in the Legends continuity. If they are well received but are quickly forgotten then Disney will likely bring in Legends in order to win back as many fans as possible and there are a LOT of classic stories that still have huge followings to this day. If all do poorly, which I don't really see happening, then Disney will likely drop Star Wars for a while, wait for the fires to cool, and then announce that they are tossing away their continuity, adapting The Thrawn Trilogy, along with adapting ALL of Legends be it as TV shows, mini-series and games and will be continuing original Legends continuity, with a few retcons to help make the series more coherent.

Regardless I do think it is inevitable that Disney will Adapt the Legends continuity as it still has a huge fanbase that is just waiting to be tapped. If anything Rise of Skywalker is likely going to reignite a LOT of Original EU fans due to one of the most well known stories of Legends being Palpatine being reincarnated via clone which TROS seems to be hinting at.

I don't see how a Thrawn Trilogy would be viable, not without massive changes to the Legends lore to such a degree it would make the changes they made to the adaptations of the Harry Potter novels look like a simple fudging. And I really don't like the Harry Potter movies past the second. There was a major shake-up behind the scenes, and you could feel it in the atmosphere, the performances, it was just layered into its very bones that it was tonally different from the two previous films and the books, to such an extent that it ruined them for me.

I do agree it will be a while if the next few films prove successful, though I doubt that. There is the possibility of returning to more Legends lore past just "what sells" like TOR if the movies keep going, but the only way they'd ever adapt a Legends book or comic storyline would be if the new film franchise tanked to such an extent, it was like... Batman & Robin, or other flops people raged against. I just don't think that's possible, so they have no reason to wanna appeal to what they now see as a minority fandom for the cult classic Legends is going to become. What's more likely would be you'd see it adapted into a CGI or otherwise animated TV show before it went to film. TV shows have more freedom than feature films do, given the limited runtime, whereas a TV show that's serialized in today's market can be extended out past that. And frankly, I'm terrified of what they'd do if they decided to create a new "Legends movie canon," which, OMG... ignoring the changes they'd bring to these adaptations, there's also the question of what should and should not be considered part of the overall continuity now, which would just turn it into the very mess they accused Legends of being. Of course, there's no way Hamill's coming back to reprise Grandmaster Luke, because he's going to be too old to be believable at that time, same with Ford, because he stopped liking Star Wars after ANH. So... I think you're still kind of dreaming in vain there. Though my worst fear is something along those lines, "recanonizing" Legends with their own interpretation of what should and shouldn't be part of it. And given the bad decisions they've made lately, I could totally see them skipping over or outright ejecting important parts of the Legends lore, in favor of the more "popular" stuff. That's how it works.

Seems more like a flashback to me.

And of course, they have such a "high" opinion of most people who buy tickets to their movies and Star Wars fans in particular (literally one dude said all he wants to see in Star Wars is a lightsaber battle, and that's it) that they'd be scared to bring Legends to the big screen for fear it'd "confuse" people because, "Wait a second, Luke was this bitter old hermit a few movies ago, and now he's... he's suddenly a lot different? Hey, hey, I think something's changed here! Damned if I could put my finger on what it is, though!"

Everyone gets confused by a trailer. Don't trust them. In the words of Chuck...

I wouldn't mind seeing pre-Clone Wars era stories adapted, although I'd be worried about how faithfully Disney would stick to them.

KotoR 1 and 2 for instance, or Darth Bane.

Or maybe a series based on the Old Republic stories where Naga Sadow and later Exar Kun were the villains.

Yeah, no. They wouldn't adapt those faithfully at all. They're for an audience whose level of intelligence is far too sophisticated for the majority of people who watch this stuff.
