Avengers: Endgame
Avengers: Endgame
I won't talk spoilers until it's out in the U.S but it came out here today and my god was it great. For a three hour movie it didn't feel like one at all. It was all I was hoping for and more.

I see Disney bought out enough seats and critics to have their way again.

While I haven't seen it (it's not out yet here in Finland) it really says something about quality of Endgame as movie when no one has anything bad to say about it. Then again MCU is known from being most consistent when it comes to giving audience quality movies each time.

Re: Avengers: Endgame
I think it felt like 2 movies back to back, but it was done very well and turned out to be a wholesome allotment of time.
Much better than Infinity War.

To be honest, I was slightly disappointed after all the hype. Not that it was bad- it was very good. I just thought it fell short of the standard set by Infinity War for a few reasons, which I won't get into in a spoiler-free thread. I'll just say that I thought all the fan service they felt they needed to do ultimately weighed down the film in a way that it wouldn't have been if it weren't the culmination of nearly two dozen movies.

Re: Avengers: Endgame
@Makeshift Python I mean, Lord knows, I hate Disney, and have taken serious umbrage (UMBRAGE!) with how they've handled Star Wars, but the "paying people off to feed an illusion" bullshit needs to DIE. Like 2016 all over again...

This isn't really a spoiler free thread, I was just not giving spoilers in the initial post because it hadn't come out for most of the rest of the world yet. That being said, I think the fanservice worked because it was all things that were earned by now. If they had done most of this stuff in something like Age of Ultron, that might of been hard to swallow, but here it works because it was such a long and hard journey to get there, the story has a right to indulge itself.

I think most any decision they went with was both bold and good. Referencing that certain trope all over was pretty funny but was stretched out I felt.

Re: Avengers: Endgame
Just got back from seeing it. Had a good laugh at the scene at the end where the women are standing over stricken, crippled, weak Peter Parker all heroic and shit. Its the most transparent and cringey thing I have seen in a long while. Like, I am trying to imagine how that went down in the writers' room and MeToo was probably referenced by name and thus this narmtastic scene was born. Bit like the Bond 25 announcement a few days ago which had ''Bond has joined the 21st century'' (read: is now sanitised) as a selling point with the same justification.
It also has to be said that for all the hype Captain Marvel got she was barely in it. Saved one guy at the start, took down a ship at the end and then... not a lot else really. Which I am glad about as it would have been annoying as hell to have had the solution being a character who has been in the MCU for a couple of months in real time. I get the impression she was meant to have a bigger role but someone realised how deus ex machina it would be.
I think this is probably it for me with the MCU. I won't spoil the ending, but to say that this is no longer going to be MY Avengers going forward is an understatement. I wonder if in ten years this will be the moment where people say ''yeah, that was the beginning of the end''. That is purely my opinion based on my own feelings and nothing more than that, but as I have said in other threads, I just don't see where they can really go from here now that we've lost so many fan favourites and had the climax the last ten years has been building up to.

I think it's a good idea not to spoil everything immediately.LavarosVA wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2019 4:10 amThis isn't really a spoiler free thread, I was just not giving spoilers in the initial post because it hadn't come out for most of the rest of the world yet. This movie clearly paid off very well for the vast majority of people, so I'm probably wrong as far as how to please fans. And I wouldn't say I didn't enjoy the fan service or that it wasn't earned. Even so, in my opinion the film didn't cohere perfectly because of the number of things they needed to accomplish. Certain things happened not because it made perfect sense for this story, but because they needed to happen to pay off fan expectations and wrap of every storyline and have the right characters shining in the right moments. The movement or the rhythm of the film seemed artificial and forced in spots to reach certain fan-friendly conclusions, rather than flowing naturally from the premises set out in Infinity War and the beginning of the movie.
Most fans I've seen are just pumped at all the cool moments and that they pulled it off overall, that's fair enough. There's no reasons why fans have to go into a nitpicking/critical mode on opening weekend. Once the hype dies down a bit, some of the issues of the film can be examined more closely. As a fan I enjoyed it, but from a more detached perspective, I think it has flaws that Infinity War didn't necessarily have.
It will be interesting to see how successful the MCU will be after this. An event like this won't be coming again for a long, long time, and the advantage of novelty will be gone. Still, some of the next phase characters have already done very well in their first solo movies, so we'll see whether comic book fatigue is actually going to be a thing or not.
