It's impossible to say what they were thinking, of course, but more than likely it was, "This is going to be really popular, let's just bank on it." And we see how well that worked out. It's quite an impressive bit of incompetence when you get Legends fanboys, original trilogy fanboys, prequel fanboys, and Luke fanboys as well as most of the new general audiences pissed off at you all in one. I do think an MCU crossover could save the new Star Wars canon, but at the same time... eh. I still feel so anxious over where this is leading in the future. And of course, it means Legends is still never coming back, since once Disney inevitably buys DC and Warner Bros, then we can expect Star Wars/DC/Marvel crossovers. And it's just so... utterly... ugh.

MCU is the hottest property between Star Wars' new brand and the DCEU, and so since Disney owns both, it might be logical for them to try and ride off the MCU's coattails to greater success than they're finding now. It fits into their overall, "We have no plan, we're just winging this" approach.
