Is it just me?
Didn't know whether to put this in general or here, but since this relates to most modern sci-fi and superhero films I've seen, I will say this... is it just me, or am I the only one sick and tired to death of CGI in our entertainment? Having rewatched Independence Day, I can safely say it blows the clips I've seen from the sequel out of the water. It doesn't feel hollow or dead. And hell, take The Dark Knight. It had CGI, sure - but only as a supplement to good, strong, practical effects. That's, tbh, really rare to see in our modern CGI world, and... I don't think we'll be seeing anything like it anytime soon.

Practical effects age better. Apparently the Thing prequel HAD practical effects, but the suits ordered some CGI be put in to cover them up so it wouldn't look cheap or something.

Best use of CG is considered to be when it supplements, as was notably the case with Jurassic Park and The Dark Knight.
I feel like CGI from when it started becoming popular is pretty cringey maybe, but it's had a steady upward climb overall, and it's been around for a whole generation by now. People react to movies cgi now as either nose-dives unless not detectable. I tend to notice it the same as practical effects. And I really haven't been able to really tell the difference with Cavill's lip in Justice League. Everybody said it uncanny valley, and I think maybe it looked dull or something, but I wouldn't care to notice if I never knew.

it's a tool just like any other, sometimes it's used well, sometimes it's used poorly.

The problem is that too many studios seem to think that they can get away with more because of CGI. Back in the day, they might have just decided not to do something due to the limitations of practical effects and budget. Another thing is that too many of the people making these movies seem to think CGI is cheap somehow, but like any other form of animation, quality is directly proportional to cost. And this has had dire consequences on companies who do CGI, because any animation studios that refuse to go along with changes or anything that raises their costs might find itself out of work as the film producers just go to some overseas studio they can get for cheaper and will let themselves be pushed around more.

Though there's a lot of CGI where the audience doesn't even know what they're seeing is CGI.
I'm not sure how it was done in his solo movie, but in Captain America: Civil War, anytime you see Black Panther in full costume, with the mask over his face, there's not actually a real guy there; he was entirely computer generated, but most people had no idea.

Dante's Peak was also practical effects, minus the lava, and that worked out great, especially when the pyroclastic cloud was blowing.

While these days CGI is used more and more practical effects are still used time to time. Mad Max Fury Road is example of really good large scale modern action movie that used practical effects and even real stunts so it feels more real than any movie that uses large amounts of CGI. But that said I do think that not all CGI is bad and it does enchant movies when used right and it does have other uses.
