In which physics environment? Because some of those are designed to work in very specific circumstances. Throw an X-Wing into (newtonian) Babylon-reality and a Starfury can delete an entire production run of X-Wings. Do the opposite and the Starfury is about on par with TIE Fighters at best.

Disney X-Wing, its got speed firepower and it just looks good. I'm not to sure about the Death Glider though considering that it follows the general Goa'ld ethos of using technological superiority to dominate civilizations that usually don't have the ability to mount an effective resistance. The Independence day fighters have a similar problem considering that once the Invaders were confronted with a technology that could nullify their initial advantages they where effectively equal to an F-16 which doesn't give me much confidence in their practicality as a fighter.

Most sci-fi fighters would be pretty shitty in real life because for some reason the only weapons they carry are short ranged dumb instead of long ranged fire and forget. The X-Wing for example, four laser guns and a small amount of torpedoes. The Viper, a couple of machine guns. The Independence Day fighter, a couple of lasers - once their shields went down they were mopped up by 1990s era fighter jets with missiles. Has anyone seen the variety of weapons an actual modern fighter jet carries in comparison?
In fact, Stargate SG-1 made this a plot point with the F-302 (missiles) vs Goa'uld Death Gliders and Wraith Darts (laser guns). Complete dominance every single time they fought one on one.
Also I have to agree with Madnar. In real life, a Reboot Viper for example would wipe the floor with an X-Wing as the latter seems to behave more like a fighter jet in atmosphere than an actual spacecraft. I think the battle as presented in the original post is impossible and requires a tiered system based on ''real'' and ''fake'' physics to be in any way plausible.

Legends X-Wing has greater firepower, though.

To be fair X-Wing isn't greatest fighter SW has to offer in either Legends and canon. There is one fighter that is far superior to X-Wing and could had given Empire huge advantage if they have had managed to mass produced those. I am of course talking about TIE Defender. TIE model that has everything that TIE Fighter lacks. I am sorry but I am huge TIE Defender fanboy ever since it was introduced in PC game TIE Fighter and it's canon take is even bigger deal to me since in canon it's Grand Admiral Thrawn's project that lost to Death Star. Of course it wasn't in movies but since it was in SW Rebels I do think it could count.

You've inspired me to make a new thread, Mecha82.

It doesn't matter, if you apply real world physics to the X-Wing the thing would barely fly. Does it even have any other engines besides the ones on the back? Because it wouldn't stop once it starts moving and it would have a hard time turning at speed. The Starfury and Viper are designed with actual physics in mind.
As I said, this discussion needs two tiers.

I'd personally take a B-Wing myself, I know its not a dog fighter but the design makes it into a pretty effective weapons platform.

While personally I was taking this thread just as silly fun I have to agree with you there. None of fighters from SW have been designed physics in mind so there is no doubt that those aren't practical in any possible way. It's that science fantasy vs. science fiction divide when comparing X-Wing or any other SW fighter to something like Viper or Starfury. So yeah, like you said this discussion needs two tiers.
