[...] Time to die...

Post by Madner Kami »

Rutger Hauer died last friday in his home, aged 75. His possibly most famous role was the replicant Roy Batty in "Blade Runner" and his performance helped making the movie what it is to a notable degree, but he took over 175 acting roles over the course of his life, many of which being parts in Sci-Fi and Fantasy-productions which always profited greatly from his presence.

Me and some school-/university-friends, who used to go to cinema reguarly, will do a spontaneous Rutger Hauer movie marathon this weekend, watching classics like Fatherland, Ladyhawke, Merlin, Lexx, Blade Runner (obviously), Sin City, Batman Begins, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Michiel de Ruyter and Blind Fury. Reportedly, he didn't like most of his roles, but damnit, he made all of them as good as he could, burning very very brightly. If you get the chance, watch any of his performances and remember one of the Great Ones. He'll be missed.

The name of this thread worried me...

From all movies that I have seen that he was in I only knew he was in Blade Runner while with others I hadn't realized that it was him.

I knew it was Rutger Hauer in some of his other roles, but I don't really connect those roles to Roy Batty. Which might speak to his talent, and also to his uniquely electric performance in that film. It's really fascinating how he dominates that film with a handful of scenes. His presence is really overwhelming, and in a few lines (partially ad-libbed by Hauer) he manages to sell the character's otherness and quintessential humanity. Magnificent stuff.

Rest in peace.

Really sad that he died. He was easily the best actor in Blade Runner and he was terrifying in The Hitcher. He will be missed.
