It's become a common joke that everything filmed in the 2010s (and maybe now the 2020s) has to be an adaptation, sequel, or reboot of something else. I don't love the trend, but lots of cool properties are getting more exposure so I won't complain too much.

If you were suddenly in control of a major TV or film production conglomerate, what book, comic, or even video game would you want to see made? If there are major hurdles to overcome in making an adaptation, how would you work around them?

For my answer, I have to go with Worm and Ward aka the Parahumans universe, by J.C. McCrae. They're published in serial form on the web for free, with Worm completed and Ward ongoing. The books are probably best described as a reconstruction of superhero fiction (rather than a deconstruction as they're sometimes labelled). There's lots of weird and visually interesting powers, moral darkness mixed with generally optimistic messages about surviving and overcoming adversity, and a crapton of characters that could be spun off into their own works if they happen to become fan hits.

I would like to see Disney switch from making live action versions of their classics and instead use it to correct their mistakes. A PG-13 live action version of the Black Caldron would probably sell.

Speaking of darker Disney properties, how about a Gargoyles movie?

Is Gargoyles on Disney+ yet?

Personally I'm kind of upset that Disney feels the need to make everything "live action" now.

I've heard rumors they're considering a Live Action Prydain series/films. I'm hopeful. I think the time is right, technology-wise, and there's enough time and distance from the animated film Disney hates to admit they made (even though I love it despite all of its flaws). The books are great, and it might be a good time to launch a new fantasy series. Unlike so many of their other "remakes" this one has a lot of room for improvement, so you can really only go up!

As for a Gargoyle movie... I really don't know how that'd work. It's like making a TNG movie; the strength of the series was in being a series, not any single story. A live action film especially seems like it would spend a lot of its budget just to exist and look good.

Yes, in fact it was trending on twitter the day after launch, with people binging Gargoyles. Disney apparently took notice. Whether that leads to anything (and whether we'll end up regretting it) is another story.

It brings to mind the endless recycling Square-Enix does with their older JRPGs, like Final Fantasies.

It's trying to appear new when you're just rehashing crap.

The only difference is there's some justification to do with with games to bring them to a new platform to access, for movies, it's completely unnecessary.

Personally, I think this is how Disney should approach Star Wars, make it less about a single epic and more about a bunch of different stories that are connected. Maybe something like a series of made-for-TV movies each about a different character then have them all coming together against a common enemy, like with The Avengers. Maybe have it end with the idea that the sith lord had an apprentice who then puts together her own team to get her revenge which leads to the epic clash.

To me that would be awesome, and it would play to the strengths of the franchise because come on! You have an entire galaxy to play with and you insist on following the same handful of people? Seems like a lot of wasted potential.

Skulduggery Pleasant should have been a massive movie franchise by now, but because it's in the kids section and not the YA section it got overlooked when all those Hunger Games clones were being made. It would have the appeal of both Harry Potter and of those Hunger Games stuff and would just print money if done right

That's what I thought they were doing, and the only reason they were also making a new trilogy was because they had a specific story they wanted to tell.

Turns out, neither thing was true. They had no story for a trilogy, and they weren't interested in telling a bunch of stories in the SW universe unconnected to the main saga (until now, finally, with The Mandalorian -- if you count the non-films).
