For those who don't know, Renegade Cut is a left leaning youtube channel. He recently did a video https://youtube.com/NeSz2gW8IsE on Star Trek.

Seeing it all laid out really shows how bad Berman was, and makes you wonder what Next Gen and Voyager could have been with a guy in charge like Behr in charge. It also makes you realise where those conservatives who complain when Star Trek dares to be progessive are coming from.

Makes you wonder if his influence is the source of the contention within the fandom today.
Despite the many complaints, he did a solid job taking over from Roddenberry even if that meant doing some things differently. He certainly help shift the franchise away from some of Roddenberry's restrictive rules that were really hindering the potential of the characters.
The franchise saw a lot of success between shows and movies. Even if tbings post-TNG didn't gain the same level of mainstreamw cultural penetration, the franchise was still big enough that it eas hard to ignore, likely one of one of the factors that pulled a young me in.
I'd say his biggest mistake was staying in the job too long. The franchise stagnated and Berman was too slow to let it innovate. One example being his (alleged) ban on Gay representation on the show and his regressive decisions surrounding female characters. Granted, he did allow for the introduction of elements like Section 31 (that remain contentious to this day) but they were too few that had little wider reaching effect.
Like Doctor Who, I think every Trek runner is fated for some contingent of backlash, a very old franchise with a lot of varying expectations.
As Chuck has said before. Berman really didn't like interesting background music! If you were to ask me to name an improvement the Kurtzman-era has brought, music would be right up there.

I think the question of what was "restrictive" and not is hard to parse between Berman and Roddenberry. Berman reduced the ideological drive of Trek, and removed Roddenberry's excessively weird ideas (look at you
The Naked Now). The ideological drive was limiting in some ways, but it was also what made Star Trek important outside of SF circles.
Sure, it is limiting to have to have a cast of characters who are all the best of humanity. Deep Space Nine is great specifically because it has characters who are not bright and noble paragons but rather deeply flawed beings. The best things in Voyager are usually when there is notable tension due to the flaws of the characters. But to remove the idea that Trek itself should be pushing for the brightest image of what Earth could give to the galaxy is going to gut the series of its raison d'etres.
I kind of wish there would be a transhumanist version of Trek at some point, since that opens the story up to talking about how humanity is not a given physicality but a kind of material spirit.

Left leaning is one way to describe him, insane is another.

There were also things such as children of the future not crying for dead parents.
Most of his strangest idea really came in early TNG. It is worth noting that he was diagnosed with cerebrovascular disease later in life and it is speculated that it could have affected his descion making at the time.
"The Fifty Year Mission' book (Volume Two) by Edward Gross describes some really bizarre atuff during those years.

First of all, this person said that Voyager was under-rated. That's a red flag right there.
I then attempted to watch some of his other videos.
This guy is so far left it isn't even funny.

This sounds like a thing that would be explored and not just dropped in without reason. The Federation is deeply materialist and humanist, so the idea sounds like they would have found a way to teach children about the nature of death in such a way that the grieving process is relatively painless.
The high concept would probably be "an episode about how this Utopian society handles death" and not "children are emotionally dead inside".
