Michael Bay's Bad Reboot of Babylon 5

Post by Captain Crimson »

I was having a conservation, and this came up, and I wanted to put it here to see the kind of reactions I would get - and yes, that is a play on Bad Robot. Why do you ask?

This reminds me of the writing/drawing exercise prompt of "Two Things", Like Muppet/Star Trek or David Lynch/James Bond.

The idea of Babylon 5, a series driven by political intrigue and dialogue being directed by someone known for visual impact and broad juvenile humor seems like the sort of mish-mash that would be interesting. I think that there would be more space combat. There would be more emphasis on the heroic nature of military service and how President Clark undermines that. And it would be blunt.

I think the ideas that would benefit from Bay's sensibilities would be those episodes dealing with crime, as I really liked "Pain and Gain" and putting that idea, that strange presentation of idiot crooks on the run in space strikes me as potentially interesting. I also like the idea of the Rangers getting a high impact action oriented blow out episode.

I think there would be a much greater emphasis on the mystical/magical side of the alien technology, as that showed up in Transformers A LOT. He might even like the King Arthur and Holy Grail stuff that shows up from time to time.

I would prefer Drew Goddard to do a reboot if we are just picking our favorites for a project.

I don't really dislike Michael Bay as a director. But no. Bay might be able to do a decent show set on a space station that serves as the hub for interstellar conflict. Star Trek did. 8-) But I think the less I thought of it as like B5, the better I'd probably like it.

I'd be surprised if I liked Babylon 5 as a movie half as much as I liked it as a TV show, to be honest, no matter who the director was. It'd be like, oh, "Green Eggs and 'Nam." They just wouldn't go together without losing something.

To be honest this is very unlikely scenario. So really I don't see this even being possible. After all he is director who mostly does big budget movies with lot of explosions and juvenile humor as well as worshiping US military. After all making TV series is so different from making big budget movies that no one in they right mind would hire Bay to do it.

It was just a play on Bay's escalating bad films and Mr. Abrams' Bad Robot company. Since it has been given a nickname of "bad reboot." Either Mr. Bay or Mr. Abrams would work in this hypothetical scenario discussion, though.

FUCK NO! If he were to lay one single, slimy finger on B5, I would kill myself.
The past tempts us, the present confuses us, the future frightens us. And our lives slip away moment by moment lost in that vast, terrible in-between.

That is a bit extreme.

You know that's not healthy way to be fan. Killing one self over something like that.

Well B5 was half a huge five year arc and half ''standard Sc fi show". Well, you can dump the ''standard stuff" right off the bat. So then you have a nice "arc'' show....and that could work.

But you would not really want to ''reboot" B5. Maybe just make the story set in the same universe...like say 1000 years AFTER B5, where the 1,000 year history comes to repeat itself. But now with the Minbari(aka as Vorlons) and Centari(aka Shadows) and the Humans and Narn stuck in the middle...all on Babylon Six.

The impression I get from some of your past comments seems as if you have an issue with fandom? I mean, maybe I could be wrong, and I would especially agree fandom, with lots of passionate people coming together, has the potential to be innately toxic, but there is also the flip side, where the creators for their favorite content have let down the fans beyond a shadow of a doubt, or where they are caught lying to them. That should not be okay. Or times when fandom is a sanity rope for people who have too much pressure in real life. But then everyone has a different opinion, so agree to disagree and all that. We should all live by a simple motto: You don't like, don't watch. I never got why some fans go check out something they hate merely to rag on it? It baffles the mind.
