Discovery Season 1 Tweak

By the time we get to the most major twist in the season, I felt it was a little too late for what was a rather succulent idea.

This gets into spoilers for those of us who haven't seen it, but we already get a brewing "he's not as he seems" plotline when the admiral is already trying to decommission him. When we get the MU revelation of the captain I get the sense that it was supposed to compile the original ominous theme of him, but it comes off to me just like a second twist. But how are you going to build up to it like they were trying to do?

Me? I would have had one of those prologue scenes that happens later in the story that shows that the mirror universe is involved, and of course you use Georgiou's mirror counterpart in the MU itself to establish that that's where we're going. After that you get rid of the decommissioning plotline because Lorca is now written to be more like Picard in Yesterday's Enterprise. Everything plays out like it does until the reveal that, left unchanged, has more of an impact as a single scene. Isaacs would crush it.

Well, I think the main problem is they changed boats mid-seasons once or twice. I'm fairly sure that when they put in the decommissioning plot line, they hadn't decided that Lorca would be a baddy from the mirror universe (maybe from the mirror universe, but not a baddy). Then they decided to change plots and move up the season 2 mirror universe plot and kill off Lorca, and did it away in one fell swoop.

I'm sure, but that twist sucks because it plays second fiddle.

Star Trek Discovery is just a pile of problems.

The three big Meta Plots- Klingon War, Magic Mushroom Discovery, and Mirror Universe really should have been a season each. Something like:

Season 1-Magic Mushroom Discovery-the USS Discovery is out exploring space and trying to make the magic mushrooms work. Meanwhile the Klingons start to get agressive and we get hints that something is up with the captain(like he would quote Emperor Soto). This would also give us a chance to get to know all the characters. The season cliff hanger would be the start of the war.

Season 2-The War-Starfleet looses badly....and the twist here is the captain takes then to the Mirror Universe to find a "special mushroom"....and the cliff hanger is "oh i'm not the captain".

Season 3-trapped in the mirror universe the Discovery must blend in, find the magic mushroom and escape...and then help win the war.

A lot of people liked the second season considerably better than first.

Well the second season does have Pike and Spock and"Number One" and Not Captain Gegorio(wink wink) and a couple more transnational stories in between the dumb "Oh Mikey you are the most special person in the whole universe Red Angel plot" and the dumb "Star Wars pew pew robot attack plot!".

Maybe season 3 will get better and Mikey won't save the universe...again sigh.

Really I don't feel like they leaned on her too much as a character. I don't think she should get a "space the final frontier" speech but her story is alright. The angel was a better climax than with Picard.

Season 1 just had too many things happening. It's like they jumped (literally and figuratively) into one thing after another.

Maybe Lorca should have been a series finale reveal. Maybe that would have worked. For me, the season is too short to make a mid season reveal like that.

Also I sort of feel that Discovery is trying to feel itself out in terms of making themselves their own but still Trek. But at the same time trying to respect Trek before it but being something newer and not beholden to previous Treks.

There is also trying not to make the universe revolve around Michael but still have the series revolve around her but yet not.

Result of studio-politics and switching goal-posts after finally some feedback filtered into their bubble from the outside.

I feel like this is something everybody kind of gets but is just not really looked at close enough. Only maybe.

I have to admit that sitting here now the reveal of Lorca mirror having some sort of work jonez for her is kind of underwhelming, like even compared to Giorgio mirror's blood bond with her which was just revealed as a matter of fact to get Michael back to prime uni. [the twist in itself of being MU is probably strong enough.

Second season though shifted that over to Spock though considering the whole prophecy centers around him stemming from his childhood. I also have to admit that I personally really like the chess scene and its implications on other series's events.
