Non binary vampires
I was thinking, why aren't there more nonbinary vampire characters? Vampires are already pretty transgressive, counter-culture-y, frequently androgynous and queer stuff. It just makes sense to have some undead bloodsuckers that don't adhere to the male-female gender binary, but I'm drawing an absolute blank when it comes to examples, and I'm pretty well-read and far ranging when it comes to LGBTQ horror and urban fantasy.

I'd think you'd be more qualified to answer that specific line of questioning than most anybody here.
Start doing some death of the author to investigate the prevalence of other orientations as you were saying.
Sorry for the non-answer I just thought it was interesting when you said that at the end.

Yes, let's have MORE non-cisallohet folks portrayed as inhuman creatures/monsters. Don't have enough of that, already.
Sorry, personal pet peeve. Along with the wide use of 'qu**r'. We're not 'unnatural aberrations' anymore, guys. Seriously!
Can't we just have stories of regular people, but now they're gay/bi/pan/trans/NB/ace/ect.? We don't have enough of those, but we have PLENTY of the damn aliens and monsters!
As to an on-topic example: Vampire: the Masquerade has had such elements before (being one of the big barometers of the alt!culture scenes will do that). Hell, V5 (most recent edition) has a power that lets you fully change your sex. And it's a Rank 1, basic, power, too. https://whitewolf.fandom.com/wiki/Thin-Blood_Alchemy

This is and especially ironic argument considering the likely origin of vampires being an allegory for the nobility and aristocratic class (literal blood suckers eh)

It's why Dracula was a count and why VtM has the Ventrue.Antiboyscout wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 6:33 pm This is and especially ironic argument considering the likely origin of vampires being an allegory for the nobility and aristocratic class (literal blood suckers eh)

Re the word, "We're here, we're queer, get used to it!" has been our marching slogan for decades. Gay doesn't mean happy anymore and Lesbian doesn't necessarily refer to somebody from a particular Greek island. I'm queer and I'm going to keep saying I am.
Yeah, I know otherization can be a problem, but also like, horror and dark fiction and urban fantasy are kinda very much areas that we're trying to do a lot to reclaim, and just like...well vampires are already so very much part of an androgynous aesthetic that it surprises me i haven't seen them claimed much in that capacity?

1) Yes, and it's an awful one that only makes it HARDER to see non-cisallohet/LGBT+ people as a normal part of modern life. Why are people so dead set on 'reclaiming' terms? It doesn't make them any less of a guttural slur. Just saying it out loud FEELS off to me.Fuzzy Necromancer wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 12:06 am Re the word, "We're here, we're queer, get used to it!" has been our marching slogan for decades. 2) But does ALMOST EVERY story and EVERY popular/recognized story have to go down Inhuman Bulovard... or up Flamming Camp Street... or 'Can't Just Say the Word' Avenue... or over to the Cemetary/Morge... or be out of town until the last second?
Okay, THAT metaphor got out of hand, still...
I just want to see people being people. Y'all can have your thick metaphors and your monogendered aliens, but can I get more people just... being people? Maybe I need to finally write that pan-lady detective novel or make that Build Engine shooter with the gay protag and his scientist boyfriend. To quote the fellow behind that Helltaker game: "I refuse to starve while those next to me feast".
He says, likely never going to go through with it...

Por Que No Los Dos?
It's not so much about "Reclaiming" the word as it being something we've had for a long while, and it's stuck, and it's academically useful, and sometimes it's more efficient than a long string of letters, and whenever we try to come up with some other umbrella term the radical squad starts raising cane and makes a big fuss about it and we circle back. Remember MOGAI?
For my part, I'm working to make progress in both areas. LGBTQIAP human protagonists and LGBTQIAP werewolves and half-angels and whatnot are in my published works.
