Ranking Avatar: The Last Airbender/The Legend of Korra Ships Because Why Not? (Please Keep Things Civil)

Post by Winter »

Best/Personal Favorites

Korrasami: Great Chemistry, the relationship is healthy, compelling and adds to both characters. Also, it's the ONLY couple in the series that Don't get together/fall in love with one another after one episode and instead take their time to build a solid foundation of friendship before starting a romantic relationship. Also, First LGBT couple in Western Animation that lead to other shows including more LGBT characters which led to shows like She-Ra and now The Owl House being created and shows like Adventure Time, Gravity Falls and Steven Universe to being more open with their LGBT characters.

Zutara: (sigh) The ship that never was and sadly may never be. Chemistry that is on par with Korrasami between two great characters, great potential for character development in and out of universe and just a fun idea. The Fire Nation Prince and who hides his emotions and the Daughter of the Water Tribe Chieftain who wears her emotions on her sleeve. And we get all this with the two treating each other as equals who respect each others abilities. Such great potential that I still hope to see one day.

Adorable Ships

Sukka: Adorable and very healthy. They respect each other and play off one another nicely. Nothing to complex but still engaging and I always look forward to when they interact.

Bopal: Basically the Sukka of The Legend of Korra with the same general strengths.

Dislike

Makorra and Masami: Former is a pale imitation of Zutara, both couples have little to no chemistry, VERY Unhealthy start to finish, Korra and Asami are far more developed and deep then Mako can ever hope to be and Mako bad habit of bouncing between both girls does him no favor. In other words, it's a generic love triangle with all that entails.

Boleska: No, Just No! Abusive and as unhealthy as one can get. Eska is terrible to Bolin and the fact that the show tries to paint Bolin as in the wrong for running from her despite her mistreatment of him is one of the dumbest things Avatar has ever done.

Maiko: Not to bad in the show despite the lack of build and, IMO, very little chemistry. Gets worse in the comics as Mai starts basically gaslighting Zuko and leaving him because he doesn't care as much about her.

Ty Lokka: Once again, No!! Yes, they have good chemistry but Azula is outright Abusive towards Ty Lee. In fact Ty Lee only joined Azula because she threatened to kill her if she didn't. Good on Ty Lee for leaving Azula and still standing up to her in the comics.

Natural

Kataang: A ship so Okay, It's Average. These are two great and well rounded characters who have such amazing arcs and yet have little to no chemistry with each other and are as generic, run-of-the-mill, Love At First Sight as you can get. He's the main protagonist, she's the girl of the team, therefore they MUST be in love. Their relationship feels more like a mother/son relationship and honestly their "feelings" for each other seem to diminish their characters.

Korrasami is a relationship that bolster the characters and their arcs as they are more then, Friends to Lovers. They see the best in each other and wish to support each other in whatever they seek to accomplish. But with Kataang it honestly feels like Aang sees Katara as more of a prize and Katara seems more put-off by Aang's feelings for her then anything else. Bot helping matters is how Katara's character was reduced post series to just being Aang's love interest then being her own character. Asami still has her own personal arcs going on outside of her relationship with Korra and Korra isn't only interested in Asami's well being.

Taang: Meh, get more of a brother/sister vibe here and they don't get to spend that much time together so I don't have that much interest in them.

Zukka: Surprisingly popular today and it's easy to see why given how quickly Sokka is ready to except Zuko and how well they work together in the Boiling Rock. Not a personal favorite but i get the apple.

Zhurrick: Personally preferred them as Asexual Life Partners and felt their romance came out of nowhere. Basically 2 seasons of nothing then BOOM (literally) they're in love also they're best character growth came from their time apart as appose to being together. Still really love both their characters, they have good and believable chemistry and it's easy to see why it's so popular.

Pemzin: Cute standard married couple in a healthy relationship. Like their scenes together but not really much to add beyond that.

Linzin: Only see these two as friends but still engaging and again, easy to see the why it has it's fans.

This is how I felt about Kataang, I can see why they like each other but it feels very much like something they would grow out of.

I agree this is a very unhealthy relationship, but if you told me she was really just messing with him the whole time it would actually be kinda funny.

But if we want to talk about Avatar shipping then i have to ask; what in the world was wrong with Bolin/Korra? What is that, Bokorra? Anyway I felt like these two really clicked on so many levels, when she dropped him for Mako i wanted to beat my head against the wall.

Borra and honestly I just kinda forgot about it. It's not bad and they do have good chemistry but it only ever felt like what it was, a one sided crush and personally I just don't think Bolin is as complex as other characters. Compare him to Bow from She-Ra. Between the four main leads Bow defiantly gets the least development throughout the series but he still gets enough and has enough personality to make him a much stronger character then one would expect. He's smart and often tries to be the voice of reason and he's the one who usually breaks ties in arguments. He's a great example of how to write an every-man in a story and the episodes that focus on him the most are hugely entertaining.

But Bolin, I just don't find him to be that compelling a character and honestly while I'm okay with him I think he bogs the series down. Borra is cute, but for me that's all it is, a cute ship that doesn't really have that much going for it.

Still wish they'd gotten more screen time as a couple other than a few seconds of them holding hands at the very end. Admittedly, that's an issue with romance fiction in general, but still... That also makes them not the best noncisallohet rep, but, yeah, early days...

Other than that, love them both to peices.

It's not just about when they end up together but how they get to that point. Aang and Katara didn't actually get that much screen time before they got together which wasn't until the literal last scene of the series. And, again, I got a lot more chemistry from Korra and Asami then I ever did with Kataang and it was actually rather refreshing to see a romance take its time instead of just rushing into the whole thing after just meeting each other.

This is what I wanted from Zutara and am so glad that my OTP became canon. :D

Yeah, but it is so rare for a show to depict a couple BEING a couple. The journey beats the destination, yes, but the hookup isn't the destination, it's the midway point before the REST OF THE JOURNEY. When it comes to romance on TV, we peaked at either 'The Addams Familly' or 'Lois & Clark'.

I can see why Zutara didn't make it, and it's all down to...she gave him a chance. He blew it. Katara is not big on second chances. She's compassionate, considerate, empathetic, and if you betray her trust you are dead to her and probably the rest of the world if she doesn't have somebody to hold her back.

Well, it still seemed like there was a chance after Zuko turned to good and when he helped Katara find her mothers killer. And even after he betrayed her and she made it clear that she was still, to put it mildly, a bit peeved at him the two still, IMHO, had better chemistry then either of them had with their canonical love interests.

I would have loved to have Korra and Bolin try it for realz. He's a devoted and big fun character. Maybe not the most handsome but definitely a better boyfriend than Mako.

That's not saying much. Mako is such a dull character and an even worse partner that almost anyone would be an improvement over him.
