John Simm is returning to BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who as The Master, it has been confirmed.
The actor last played the evil Time Lord in 2009/2010 special The End of Time opposite David Tennant's Doctor, before regenerating offscreen into Michelle Gomez’s new incarnation Missy.
“I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back,” Simm said. “It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what The Master gets up to in the next series.”
Steven Moffat, writer and executive producer, added: "Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you'll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what The Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor.
“It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash."
Doctor Who returns to BBC1 on Saturday 15th April at 7:20pm
I'm torn between "That's pretty cool" and "I wish they had Derek Jakobi back as well.

Definitely agree that I wish Derek Jacobi could be coaxed into returning. On the other hand, it is still pretty cool. I mean we've had multi-Doc stories forever but only ever one Master at a time. This could be a pretty groovy idea.

A multi-master story is overdue. Just as long as they don't bring back Eric Roberts as well.

Hmm this could be interesting to say the least. It is about time we got a multi-master story and I'm sure Simm and Gomez will be great together. Part of me is a bit concerned Moffat will do something well Moffat-y in the special and ruin it a bit.
But hey who knows.
And yeah I wish Derek Jacobi could make a appearance in this.(Even if just him on some video message talking to the other Masters like they did in the Three Doctors.)

Eh, I've never been a fan of the "Ooh look how kooky I am!" version of the Master. Derek Jacobi so far with his two minutes has been the best Master in the new series for me.

Neither Simm's Master nor Gomez's is particularly badly acted, though. Its just that some questionable writing decisions were made (particularly, I think, with Simm's, who is going to be off-putting unless you have a high tolerance for the goofy even by Who standards).

I like how one reviewer described Simm's Master: "Terrible Master, pretty good impression of Jim Carrey as The Riddler." Yeah, I have nothing against the actors. I greatly enjoyed Simm in Life on Mars, for one.
Someone made a fan trailer of Charles Dance as a dead serious Master, which I really like:

As I recall, his name was bandied about a while back, before Gomez was cast, and while I like the idea of a female Master fine, I'd still say its a shame that Dance has never played the role. He's a good actor, especially for the "cultured tyrant" type of character- I've enjoyed his work as both Tywin Lannister on "Game of Thrones" and Lord Vetinari in the TV adaptation of Pratchett's Going Postal. I'd like to see him in the role.

I'd be tickled by a Geoffrey Beevers dubbed Crispy Master making a cameo.

I love Michelle Gomez's take on the Master, and I think Moffat's done a much better job than Davies' did with Simm as the Master.
Given that there seems to be quite a lot of time/place altering shenanigans in this series, I wouldn't be surprised if they're behind it, and that they're also responsible for the Mondasian Cybermen.
I'm slightly curious if we'll also get a multi-Doctor episode, and have David Bradley return as the first Doctor as the 'Companion' in the Christmas special.
Looking forward to Saturday regardless
