Superman: American Icon Or Global Icon? A Superman Article

Post by BBally81 »

An article I've written about the discourse regarding Superman's status as an American icon vs a Global icon has been uploaded on the Superman Homepage.

The US government in DC is kind of like what I think of the take on the Rebels in The Mandalorian series. Somewhat subversive in their position in a modernist backdrop.

I think Superman is how we Americans, as a nation, want to be perceived by the rest of the world. We want to be the big strong super hero swooping in to save the day like we did back in WWII. "Truth, Justice and a better tomorrow" I think is America trying to come to terms with the fact that we haven't always been hero.

There isn't a nation on earth that doesn't have some red in their ledger I just think we have less than some.

I felt that that adequately framed the Bush administration with regard to the patriot act. But there's also a lot that's gone on since then considering that we can define ourselves through a lens of post 9/11 generational development.

*raises eyebrow*

Given that we're a much younger nation than most, perhaps. The scale of the modern world might counter that, though - we're the inheritors of the British Empire's manipulative and ruthless behavior.

Superman is a Socialist icon and anyone that tries to strip that from him is doing the character a disservice.

As a non-American he's significantly more of one than Captain America, namely as y'know he doesn't have 'America' in the name and isn't so draped in the flag. There's very much a reason why they called his film The FIrst Avenger in some countries outside the US.
